Good morning! I am rescuing my 3 year old mini rex bunny this weekend, and I have been researching; saving; and preparing for the past 10 months. There are just a couple questions that I couldn’t find answers to, that I would like to ask now that the time has come. Thank you!

        – When I bring Chip into his new home, should I let him out into my whole bedroom to look around, or should I release him into his x-pen to hide and kind of get used to the scenery (and have the pen door open in case he wants to explore)??

        – He has been living in terrible conditions the past 3 years, that is honestly one of the reasons I am rescuing him; to get him out of the terrible place he lives right now. He lives in a wire-bottomed bird cage, and doesn’t have any vegetables or pellets; no unlimited water; and a limited supply of old hay. So, should I treat him as if he were a baby? Slowly introduce veggies since he hasn’t had them in who knows how long?

        – How long should I wait to get him neutered? He is 3 years old, and I’m not sure of his health but when I met him everything seemed normal from the outside. Should I wait a few months and let him get comfortable? Should I get him neutered asap?

These are my only concerns at the moment and any answers would be greatly appreciated; even if you only want to answer one or two of the questions. I’ll update everybody on my journey with Chip once I have any updates.

Oh wow. Very glad he’s coming to a new home with you. I hope his feet are okay.

If me, I would limit how much space he has initially. Too much could be overwhelming. The pen sounds like a great option.

It would be wise to slowly start him on the veggies and let his gut get used to it. You may find there are some he is more sensitive too then others.

How long you wait for neutering is really up to you. I recommend you take him in for a health check soon and that will also give you a chance to see how he copes with the vet visit.

Good luck! We’d love to see pictures once you have him settled in.

Congrats! Can’t wait to see photos!

With new bunnies, I always take them to the vet the day I get them or the next day.
