I literally just finished building a bunny condo for my two new additions out of those organize-it crates. However, I need some advice. I am always hearing about giving bunnies cardboard and other paper products to chew and rip apart. Yet, when I give my little ones these items, they usually eat them! After building the condo I decided to line the bottom of the levels with those foam kindergarten mat things (similar to yoga mats). I probably should have done research first, because 5 minutes after putting the little ones in, they began to chew and eat the mat. Is this safe??? I googled it and found nothing toxic, but then again I really don’t know what I am looking for. Any help??? THANK YOU!

The foam mats are NOT safe- not because of the compostion/ingredients of the foam but the fact that foam does not digest and break down and can easily cause a GI obstruction.  You should remove the mats ASAP.

I work at a vet clinic and a couple of years ago a dog chewed these up out of the blue (had previously ignored the mats for years)- got seriously ill, could not keep any food down and had to have the chunks surgically removed from his intestines.  Cardboard has a chance of digesting- foam does not.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! That was my fear, while it is not toxic, rabbit digestion is just so sensitive. The levels are now covered in bed sheets and towels until I can purchase some indoor/outdoor carpet tiles (which seems to be the suggestion of most bunny cube homes).

            Again, thanks for the advice!
