i got her two small animal Kong toys and plugged the small hole at the bottom with duct tape which she has not tried to chew (yay).  Then i stuff the toy with food and things she’ll like.  Tonight i filled it 1/4 full of apple juice, 1/4 full of water, then dropped in a baby carrot and a couple of sprigs of rosemary, and put it in the freezer so the water/juice mix will freeze, holding the carrot and herb in tight, making it more of a challenge to get everything out.  i’ve done it with an apple slice and juice mix, and with herbs stuffed in and the water was simply herb-steeped water.

This is a treat, a toy, and it’s cold so it helps with my warm room issue (today was the first day i’ve gone up and it didn’t seem overly warm – yay!).  She’s also decided that broccoli isn’t so bad as long as it’s slightly thawed, and i’ve been putting her salads in the freezer with ice and water for about 45 minutes before giving them to her.  Other than leaving some water in the bottom of the bowl with a few leaves, this is going over well, too.

She still loves frozen grapes, frozen strawberries, frozen apple, and frozen carrots as treats.  Nothing new there.

Thanks all for the great ideas, and i’m feeling a little better about the situation.  DH is reporting only minimal allergies, and those seem to correspond with the days i have to take her down to the garage to brush her and apply Allerpet when he comes through the garage after work.  i still wish she had a real home and a real family who would treat her like the pet she deserves to be, but meanwhile she’s enjoying being spoiled some in other ways to make up for my lack of time to spend with her.  And FWIW she’s found a best friend in one of my dogs, who lies by her run for long periods of time.  i’ve let them meet under VERY cautious circumstances and that has gone really well so far.  Checkers is roughly the size of the dog’s head.  Actually smaller.  i don’t trust the other dogs enough though.

That’s sweet of you to say, but i know it’s not ideal, i’m just doing the best i can with what i have (and overcompensating lol). And it can’t be long-term anyway because of my hubby’s allergies.

I can’t remember does he take prescriptions? Are you trying to rehome your bunny? (memory is good, but short!! )

Checkers was never meant to be my bunny. i rescued her 9 months ago from a bad situation after calling a rescue who said they would help me find a foster home and rehome her, but they needed me to take her home first. The rescue flaked, never returned calls or emails, and i found her a home. The home couldn’t keep her, so she came back, and i couldn’t put her back in the guest room because it’s about to become a bedroom for our soon-to-be foster child, so i had to put her in the finished room over the garage which has A/C vent but is still too warm (and also where the dog crates are).

So, yes, i’m trying to rehome her (though she’s not “mine”). My husband isn’t on meds, though. He is wonderful to me, and i’d rather not inconvenience him that way if at all possible. i know he wouldn’t ask me to be miserable or to go on medicine with side effects, etc just so he could have a pet, but i’m sure if i asked him, he would. Which is all the more reason not to ask him to, if you know what i mean. Plus with the dogs, who obviously can’t be loose with the bunny, and with taking on a foster child, i don’t have the time to spend with Checkers that she deserves. i’d get her a companion bun, but that could exasperate the allergy issue and isn’t a good idea. So… here i am with a generally sweet but undersocialized diva bun who needs a great home.

P.S. For at least 4 of the 7 months Checkers was here the first time, i was seriously injured and couldn’t get up to care for her as well as i would have liked. i tore my ACL and was on crutches for over 4 months, and limited mobility for a while after that. i was worried about the heat in the bonus room, and about the noise from the dogs when they are crated (not most of the time, but one is crated anytime we leave due to separation anxiety and barks loudly when we come home), but she’s showing no stress from either issue at all and seems pretty happy really. So the truth is she has it better now than she did for the previous 9 months! Probably ever actually.
