The new vet consulted with an exotic expert from IDEXX to discuss the best course of treatment. They both were in agreement that previous vet did not keep Charlie on antibiotics long enough. He said any of the ones she has been on should have taken care of the issue. He also researched all the latest information before calling me in addition to consulting with the exotic expert from IDEXX.

It is felt also, that although the culture showed actinobaccilus, that there very well could be other stuff brewing up there such as pastuerella.

The exotic expert from IDEXX recommended going back to one of the antibiotics that seemed to help, but at a stronger dosage.  The problem is the infection has been there for 6 months now and been subjected to antibiotics already.

It was decided to use Baytril at 4X the strength. She is on a 14 day course. I am to touch base with him Thursday about progress and she is to see him in 2 weeks. IF baytril is working, then she will continue on an extended dose for 2 weeks AFTER she has been symptom free for 2 weeks. If it doesn’t seem to be working, we will either change antibiotics or add nebulizer with medication to the treatment plan. We discussed gut health, which is a concern. She is taking probiotics and he said to continue.

The concentration is 90mg/ml. She weighs 6lbs and her dosage is 0.6 ml once a day. She has taken 4 doses as of today. Yesterday was good, but today she has twice that I’ve seen sneezed thick white snot.  I sure hope that doesn’t mean it’s not working….

This has been such a long, long road with her.

Happy to hear she’s started her treatment. 🙂  I bet she’ll be better in no time. Your new vet sounds great.
