Yesterday boyfriend had picked up Charlie and was holding him (badly) and Charlie being the squirmer that he is worked himself loose, fell backwards onto the coffee table and hit his shoulder hard. The poor little thing was licking his shoulder for a while, then stood still and wouldn’t hop anywhere.

I stayed up all night with him watching him, keeping him warm and trying to keep him still. Luckily his feeling better today because otherwise there would have been trouble!

The vet says it’s not broken and gave him some painkillers. His moving about fine now and eating well but we still have him confined to a smaller space so he doesn’t get over confident while on painkillers.

I just had to vent because  I can’t yell at boyfriend because he feels terrible (and he should too!) but I am soo mad that he was so irresponsible with my baby because if anything had happenned…

OOooo…! I’m so sorry! I’ll be mad at your boyfriend for you since you can’t be! Grrrr!

          Poor Charlie…so he’s going to be okay? It’s just a little sore/bruised?

This definitely deserves retaliation in the form of guilt-tripping…weren’t you wanting to get another bunny? And the boyfriend said no? Maybe he now has no choice but to say yes, so poor hurt Charlie can have sume bunny-comfort!

Before the guilt trip though, you should show him the proper way to hold charlie.

That’s where the problem lies, I’ve shown him so many times, now I’ve just banned him completely from picking him up. My boyfriend has only ever owned dogs, robust dogs like rotties and he doesn’t seem to be getting the concept that Charlie is fragile. Maybe the fact that he’s an attack rabbit doesn’t help.

Aww…feel better Charlie! This can happen to experienced bunny holders too Cassi. I had Jersey fall and smack head first into wood resulting in scraping off some fur on her nose. I’m sure your boyfriends guilt is enough and he’s realised how different bunnies are. Lesson learned! (but scary huh?) Hope Charlies back to normal!!!!

I agree with showing him how to hold Charlie. Even though you’ve done it before, try taking a stuffed animal the same size and practice with it. If he does this over and over he may learn a good grip. You could even wiggle the toy from below to teach him how to hang on the right way. Also, teach him to squat (not bend over) the minute the “bunny” starts to squirm so he won’t fall from a height and over furniture. So what if Charlie gets loose and has to be caught again.
This happens really fast though, and as Jerseygirl said, anyone can be in this situation. So glad he’ll be OK.

Hope your bunny feels better soon!! My boyfriend never picks up the rabbits because they always try to jump out of his arms and I freak out at him. They only love their mama! Although Stormy will spend like 5 minutes giving him kisses which he doesn’t do to me

I’m so sorry about Charlie’s fall.  I know how you feel.  Every time my son’s friends come over they want to pick up Edson and I tell them NO rabbits are very fragile. I know they think I’m this neurotic woman! My son also tells them no but I fear one day one of these kids will do it anyway. when we are not in the room Very scary how jumpy they can get., people just have no idea.  I sure hope your guy is not hurt any more than a bruise.

poor Charlie! please take it easy on your bf. like Jerseygirl said, even experienced bunny handlers can drop a bun. and if carried correctly, they might get spooked and start twisting to get away. this is why it’s better to not carry a bun unless absolutely necessary.

I’m so glad you got him to a vet!! That’s perfect-and the painkillers will help him feel good.

One thing that may help your bf if he ever needs to pick up Charlie again is to use a towel. I have one bunny who just goes crazy if he is picked up so I use a towel and make sure he is wrapped up really well so he can’t wiggle out.

Mimzy just squirmed out of my arms the other night and landed hard on the hay tubs and slid to the floor. (there’s a thread about it in the lounge somewhere I think) then he scooted under my bed. I about had a heart attack myself and BOY talk about guilt. I still feel bad about it, but I got some great suggestions from the folks here as to how NOT to have that happen again!

I hope Charlie feels better soon.

And, not to be confrontational, but isn’t this the guy who said he was going to hurt Charlie because your bun chewed a pair of his shoes or something? Perhaps some more stern instruction is necessary to enlighten this gentleman as to how bunnies (and other creatures) need to be CAREFULLY handled. They are definitely NOT rottweilers. (worries)

I am just concerned about you and your bun. And any other bun that may come to live with you.

Thanks MimzMum, I really understand your concern but that guy wasn’t boyfriend, he was my OLD flatmate. My boyfriend wouldn’t hurt anyone/thing intentionally and has gone out of his way to love Charlie as much as possible without picking him up. Infact…drum roll please…he was even guilty enough to let me adopt Layla, a lop-or-not at the shelter here. So Charlie has a new girlfriend, we’re bringing her home on Wednesday.

i think accidents happen, i always hold hopscotch correctly yet he has managed to get away once or twice (i dont pick him up whilst standing so he has never dropped anything more than a foot down onto the sofa, thank god) but good on you for going the vet, dont worry everything will be fine and im sure this shock will make your bf much more careful around your bunnies ***vibes*** for your poor bunny!

Ah, my bad! Sorry to mistake the bf for the flatmate. Glad to hear that all is well and that the new bun is on the way! Congrats!
