        Hello!

Last night, I adopted a beautiful girl bunny from a local rabbit rescue. (We met her last week.) She’s about two years old and lived in a heated garage in her own private pen, alongside about ten other bunnies each in their own pens. Now, she lives by herself in our kitchen–with freedom to come out as long as we’re watching. She was consistently socialized, but we don’t know exactly what kind of interaction she’s used to.

Bunny came with the name Gabriella (or Gabby), but we’d like to change her name to Galatea. Most of the bunnies adopted from this particular rabbit rescue get their names changed. However, my mother is sure that changing her name is a bad idea. (My mother read an article about an elephant at a zoo becoming depressed when its name was changed, and recovering only years later when the zookeepers reverted to the elephant’s original name–but a bunny is not an elephant!) Our bunny does not seem to respond to any name yet, but she’s still new to us and mostly wants to hide in her box.

What have been your experiences with changing your bunny’s name?

(I apologize in advance if there’s already a thread on this topic–the website tells me that the Search feature is currently not working.)

        Thank you!

Honestly I call my two boys like 8 different names, and they respond to some and not others, so it’s not really a huge deal. I have a tendency to call Bombur either Chub-a-lub, Chubber Nutter, or Lil Nugget, and I call Asriel either Snooty, Snootman, Snoot Nugget, or Nugget Nose.

It’s great that you adopted a bunny from a rescue! I have changed a few of my rabbit’s names over the years, usually keeping the name close sounding to their original name, but not always. One of the rabbits I adopted didn’t have a name at the shelter, just an ID number. All of my rabbits got along fine with their new names. Galatea sounds similar to Gabriella, and I really don’t think it matters anyway, so I think you’ll be fine with changing her name.
