Bumblebunny ( a 3 lb. part harlequin dwarf we found hopping down the street a year and a half ago) has a set diet. Romaine, cilantro, Italian parsley and and 1/8th of a cup of oxbow pellets in the morning and evening and at noon a blueberry, a carrot slice and a few carrot tops. He has unlimited wheat, oat, and orchard hay and he gets a papaya tablet and oxbow timothy treat when we get home. He loves his food and usually starts eating as soon as he sees it.
Friday evening he stopped eating and using his litter box. He crouched in a corner and did not want to be bothered. Saturday I made an appointment with one of his vets who is a board certified small lab animal vet who specializes in rabbits. About an hour before his noon appointment he started eating and using the litter box. The vet could find nothing unusual. He was well hydrated and she could not feel anything that might be causing a problem. She looked for fleas since there are cats in my building and she thought she might have seen one, but was not completely sure. She said keep an eye on him and if he did not eat bring him back. Sunday everything was normal. Monday morning he exhibited some of the same behavior, lethargic and not interested in food. I left his food in his home and came from work at noon to check. During the morning he ate most of the food and he ate his noon food when I gave it to him. In the evening he looked at his lettuce for a while and finally ate it slowly. Litter box habits appear ok and he is active, but not as much as usual.
Any suggestions would be appreciated since this is not normal behavior. Could temperature have an effect, it is cool at night, but in the afternoon the room can reach the low 80’s for a few hours? Should I have the vet treat him with Revolution? Is there anything else I should ask the vet to check? He was seen a month ago for a six month check up and there were no problems at that time.
