Cassy is getting spay today and will be coming home around 4:30 =) Maybe she’ll stop being as annoying now (she was spotting more and being more demanding because she was sexually frustrated. =)

Good luck Cassy girl!  Where did you take her for the procedure?

AWW!  I wish I would’ve seen this post earlier.  Well, I am sending post operation healthy healing vibes Cassy’s way.  Spaying is always a bit rougher on bunnies than neutering.  The guys have it easy in comparison. For females, it usually takes a couple of days of just lounging around and trying to gain back a decent appetite.

              How’s she doing?

She’s being a good post op bunny.  She is drinking and eating bits of hay and pellets.  She is pretty much curled up in a corner of her cage and not moving for most of the day accept to go to the litter box which she is being very good about in spite of being rather uncomfortable.  She’s not licking at the incision or anything like that.  She’s resting a lot.

I got her spay at the oakland spay and neuter clinic.  They were very nice and knowledgeable and she seemed to do just fine.  Being a student it is a much less costly way to go as well, it cost only $40.

Nitygress – sounds like things are normal.  Resting and sleeping. I’m glad she’s eating and drinking, that a wonderful sign.   Just keep an eye on her to make sure she isn’t in pain for too long – if so you may need to ask for some pain meds, if they didn’t give you any.

Fujoe – Spay and neuter clinics are a good alternative if they have a lot of experience with bunnies.   Here in the Bay Area, there are many rabbit rescues. SaveAbunny, several HRS Chapters (including the headquarters), Rabbit Row, Alameda Point Rabbit Rescue, and thats just here – there are tons more not too far from here like Rabbit Haven,

I think that because of that, there are more resources here, like spay and neuter clinics that are rabbit savvy.

I don’t think it is like that everywhere – though there are spay and neuter clinics all over – and I bet in Chicago.  You’d just have to make sure to screen them with questions and/or ask Red Door if they would recommend them etc etc.  I know it’s too late now, but i know many places don’t recommend them just because many specialize in cats and dogs, and since rabbits are completely different when it comes to this, it can be risky unless you know for sure they know how to do rabbits.

BinkyBunny- She seems to not be in much pain at all! A little uncomfortable maybe, but she’s started to be restless being in "cage only" to prevent any tearing for 3 days and tearing up her newspaper.  So I decided to let her out to play.  She’s being playing really normally and even did a few low awkward binkies because she didnt want to move her lower part too much.

She’s currently munching on the busy bunny grass hay ball I got her from Rabbit Ears in Kensington.  That rescue has tons of BusyBunny toys that are cheaper than buying them online and having them shipped.  They also sell carefresh ultra for $17 for 50liters!  I dont know how the owner does it but I wont complain!  Especially since Cassy can go through those small natural willow bark rings in two days!

I also agree that the oakland spay and neuter clinic seemed very knowledgeable about bunnies, I know that the oakland SPCA actually has a large number of rabbits in their shelter, not just dogs and cats because they advertise the bunnies agressively on craigs list

The Spay/Neuter clinics are a relatively new invention.  They are subsidized by local governements because there is a direct correlation between the cost of spay/neuter and the number of animals that show up at shelters and have to be put down.  If a municipality makes the up front investment to provide low cost spay/neuter, there are many fewer puppies, kittens and bunnies that show up as "strays".  Around here, I think a private vet would charge $150-$200 for the procedure, yet you can take an animal into the Palo Alto Spay/Neuter clinic and get a spay for $45 and a neuter for $35, even if you are not a Palo Alto resident.  We send lots of Rabbit Haven bunnies to the Palo Alto clinic.

If you are interested in this topic, check out this amazing article.  It outlines the reduction in euthanasia rates in San Francisco and Palo Alto when those two cities started offering low cost spay/neuter.

I’m so glad to hear she’s eating well, it sounds like she’s making a great recovery!

Osprey – thanks for the info about the two programs- I’ve bookmarked it to pass along to other bay area people 🙂

Hey, I’ve been there several times to get pellets.  I have a friend that lives in Kensington, so I always stop at rabbit ears when I need something.  I usually grab a bag of pellets because they are so reasonably priced there. I think I got the largest bag for under $9 bucks.  Usually they are at least $12.

And of course, I like to visit the rescue bunnies in the back.  Great Place!

yeah, I’m sorta in love with "Zipper" there, as well as the bonded pair but my bf looked at me like I was crazy when I looked at him with "arnt they the best I want them puppy dog eyes" look.
