Ok, someone in the city I live in has a cassowary bird. Yesterday a truck crashed off the freeway into the fence and the bird got loose. I’m all about making sure animals are safe, but this is a species of bird that is known to attach and kill people. I usually walk home from work at night (it’s only 5 blocks) and I’m so glad I ended up with the car tonight. This is kinda scary, he got loose about 3-4 miles from my house. I’m telling my husband to keep his cat safe indoors too. Not sure it would attack a cat and I certainly wouldn’t miss him, but he doesn’t deserve to be hurt like that.

Hopefully it will be caught soon. Animals have a way of being alert to possible danger even before we are, so the cats may sense its presence if it comes too close. It’s good to be cautious, just not to worry too much.

Oh those are so cool!!! Not that it escaped, but it is a very cool bird. They are what I think a raptor was like, or at least some aggressive dinosaur. I don’t know what your area is like (city, suburbs, or countryside), but the bird will probably be found soon. I’m sure they are probably expensive too, and it’s owner will want it back.

Apparently they found it. I live in a city in Utah so you’d think he’d be easy to find. Apparently he was hurt and went into some dude’s backyard. They guy didn’t think the bird was anything out of the ordinary and just ignored it! If I saw a bird taller than me that weighed 100+ pounds in my yard I wouldn’t need a news report to have me on the phone to the cops telling them to rescue me. He’s really lucky he didn’t go out where it was and get hurt. One of the news reports described them as very dinosaur like birds that sometimes disembowel people. Made me think of Jurassic Park when he tells that kid about how the raptors cut you up and eat you alive. I’m glad it’s caught, but it’s still a freaky bird. Maybe the guy who owns it will take more preventative measures to keep it and everyone else safe. Oh, and somewhere it said it’s worth something like $100,000 to $200,000. I still question how smart it is to let someone own one outside a zoo.

This was a cool thread to follow! I love wacky animal stories like this. I’m so glad they caught it, though… eek!

What?!? Who in their right mind would want a bird like that??? That bird is bigger than my Rottweiler!

Nuh uh. No way would I EVER get near a bird like that.

I did a search on cassowary bird.  Never heard of it b4.  I came up with   http://www.odditycentral.com   It shows a pic of it attacking a door and someone was behind it keeping the bird from themselves.

                      Neat looking bird.

That has got to be one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen.

I’m so NOT a bird person, even though my parents have 11 of them…
