Is baking soda dangerous to use in bunny cages? I use Carefresh and also don’t notice a strong smell until I dump out the litter pans. But lately Mr. Bun-Bun has been peeing wantonly everywhere. He pees outside of the litter pans (they’re twice his size and I don’t know how he does it. Whenever I see him, he’s completely in the box.) Maybe he’s peeing from the upper level and the pee is pooling on the bottom floor. Whatever’s going on, it’s stinky and gross, I’m cleaning constantly and using baking soda also (after sopping up the urine, I sprinkle baking soda on for awhile, then brush that away.)
So I guess the baking soda isn’t staying in the cage, he can’t ingest it. Just wondering what I can do. Maybe he was never really litter-trained, I got him at 1 year of age and he’s had so many issues with peeing on everything at all times, it’s a little confusing.
For the original question, I just kept using Carefresh which is what came with him when I adopted him. The big bags are 15 to 18 dollars at normal pet stores, and grossly overpriced at big box pet stores. Maybe I should try a different litter. The bags I use are compressed to 25.7 liters and double in size more or less.
