Is it true you can just dump carefresh into the toilet after it has been used? Are there any other litters that can be dumped like this?

And now, a totally unrelated question, i heard that to bunny proof wires you can just get tubes used in fishtanks, is this true? I only have two cords plugged in at all times in my room, and one in my bathroom, so i dont know if i need one of those huge things to stuff a million cords into.

Hi Megan. I don’t know about the carefresh being able to be flushed. It seems like it would clog up the toilet if you put too much in there, but you could try a little bit and see what happens! Ha ha. I for sure wouldn’t do it if you live in a rural area and have a septic system, because it would clog the pump. When you get it wet, it’s like paper mache sort of.

As for the bunny proofing for wires, I would use the hard plastic tube stuff you can get at an auto parts store. I’m not sure what the fish tank stuff is made out of, if it would be hard enough. The stuff from the auto parts store comes in different colors and different widths. I got 3/4″, but it comes in a lot smaller widths too.

Hmm, I know it can be composted but as for flushing, I would hesitate to do that unless the packaging specifically says that you can. Paper that is flushed usually disntegrates quite easily in the swishing action and I don’t think that you’ll find the same effect with CareFresh litter. I could totally be wrong but I would have to say no.

i know the packaging of the pressed paper pellets i use say it’s flushable… but i have yet to try it.  the pipes in our house are very old… and we rent, so i don’t want to take a chance in messing things up.  our landlord already had to call the pipe person out to flush the system one time b/c of baby wipes we use for my son… so i have no idea how true it is.

You know, I was just thinking about flushing the litter last night as I stared at the package….
but then I wondered about the rabbit poo…if that is flushable?

Yes – the pvc piping that is used is fishtanks works great to protect cords.  you can buy it in different sizes and it’t not all huge. but if you only have two cords out you might be able to come up with a creative solution to get them off the floor.

I’m not sure how happy your toilet would be, but according to the CEO of the company – Carefresh can be flushed:

CEOCFOinterviews: What makes your product the best?

Mr. Ellis: “If you use it in a bed, it is comfortable to animals and the animals like it. It is environmentally friendly, is cost effective and it controls the odor in the animal’s bed.  Veterinarians use it and many people tell us their veterinary hospitals have never smelled so good and it lasts longer and they do not need to change it as often. It can be disposed of by flushing it down the toilet, burning it, or putting it in the waste; it is an excellent product. It does not contain things like aromatic hydro-carbons.”

Megan… i would still check with your parents before flushing it… they know the house and they’ll know if the pipes can handle it… you don’t want to cause them any problems.

I usually dump mine in the garbage and then the stuff thats sticks to the corners of the litter box…I run some water in the litter box from the tap in the bathtub and then flush it!

Thanks for all the info everyone! I just heard somewhere that it can be flushed, and i thought that would be such an awesome way to get rid of it. lol. I guess i will just put it in the trash like everyone else does.

Do most of you guys keep an enclosed small space for your bunny to have alone time or to sleep in? like a box or a giant igloo? i know i read in a bunch of places that bunnies like to have this, but in all the pictures of your guys’s setups i dont seem to see anything like that? if it is a bunny that is allowed to roam around a room does the cage serve this purpose?

my bun has a room to herself with her litter (a cage thats always open) and food & water… there’s a dresser in this room that she goes underneath to nap & hang out during the day.  she also likes open ‘perches’ higher up too but i think thats only for  chillin.  lol.  so i think it depends a bit on your set up.  i’ve seen some rabbitats with different levels which give buns a covered section (i’m working on one right now… yay fun), or you could drape a towel partially over their enclosure too.  i agree that buns like to have a ‘warren’ type of place to hang out in… and if they’re roaming free in your house my guess is they’ll find a place & claim it

Meadow has a little wood house inside of her cage.  she’s really only in her cage at night and during the middle part of the day when she’s snoozing.  she used to love to sleep inside her house, but i think it may be getting a bit small for her.  she will still sleep in it most everyday, but now her favorite location is flopping on top of it (or flopping on the couch.)

sorry for the blurry pic… but you can get the general idea.

My buns don’t have a hidey-hole in their cages that they go into. However, when they’re out for playtime, I have a cardboard “condo” that’s 2-stories they play in. They usually end up on the 2nd floor looking out on the world!

Sometime, Kahlua will sit under my desk while I’m working. He chills out there. Once I had a box with a client’s papers under my desk and the next thing I knew, Chloe was in the box shredding his receipts! Lesson learned…never put your client’s accounting documents in a box underneath your desk with 2 bunnies running around! Luckily, I saved them!

Once I put an empty paper bag in the playpen. They LOVED that thing so much that initially they fought over it.

lol… can you imagine having to tell a client ‘seriously… the rabbit ate it’.  if they had a bun they’d think it was purty cute   my girl loves paper bags too.  very cute to watch her lop ears flopping as she tosses a bag around!

Yeah, I know! I could see it now, having to tell him that my rabbit ate his receipts! It was a good thing that I caught her in time. She was having the time of her life in that box. When I think about it, I don’t know how she managed to get in there without turning it over or making a sound. All I could hear was the ripping of paper! Buns…you gotta love them! They give me so much joy!
