  Although my shelters aren’t advertising it this year, many rabbit rescues and shelters build little care packages during the holidays to bring to as many shelter rabbits as possible. These usually consist of such things as a paper bag filled with hay, paper tubes and popsicle sticks. It may not seem like much but for many buns it is the most exciting thing they have seen in quite some time.
  
  If you know of a shelter nearby, you can find out if they are doing such a program and a simple donation of paper bags or tongue depressors (I find them at art stores) can go a long way. If they’re not, and you have some spare time and a little extra cash, you could ask them if they would mind if you dropped off some care packages and make them yourself at home.
  
  Of course, a simple monetary donation is always a happy present. Note that this is from the 2008 drive. I can’t seem to find one for 2009 with the HRS.

  Oh that’s a great idea! It makes me sad when I think about all those shelter buns who won’t have homes for the holiday season.

  This is a great idea. My local shelter does a secret santa so everyone buys a bun a toy for christmas.
  
  One FYI though…I heard from busybunny that some shelters have had rabbits die from the splintering from popsicle stix. So these are something that probably should be avoided to be safe. The rabbits had lacerated organs from swallowing the sharp splinters.
  
  Not really sure how to really put this out there because I know most people (including myself) used popsicle stix for a long time for rabbit toys.

  I think this is a wonderful idea. I remember when I was doing rescue volunteer work I was assigned the VERY fun duty of giving out these types gift bags. I can’t tell you how excited these bunnies get! It really does make them so happy. You have to remember that many of them don’t get out that much because they are just waiting for the their forever home. It was so much fun to watch them tear open their little brown bags filled with chewable and edible items, and spend time just having fun. I wish I would have thought about this earlier (we’ve just been so swamped and boogley-eyed) but we could have helped with a creating donated little gift bags for a local bunny shelter if I would have planned ahead. Something to strive for next year. I would also take video so people could see the positive results of their gift bag donation.

  what a great idea to assemble goodies for the shelter. I’ll have to find out if my local shelter will accept them.
  
  The only problem that I see is that if there are treats inside the bags and there are rabbits with special diet needs, then your work will be defeated. I suppose monetary donations would be best.

  Yeah, I just made a serious mistake and told the head of SaveABunny that I am on vacation until Jan 4th. Now, I’m expected to be at the rescue every day.

  HAHAHA…And….you knew about her super human powers of persuasion too. What in the world were you thinking?! Oh, well, seeing a bunch of bunny noses greeting you everyday isn’t so bad. Have fun!

  There’s no reason why bags of hay can’t be donated now, or even anytime. The bunnies have their own religion which includes silent prayer, and I’m sure they’re prayers would be answered with these hay (and hidden raisins?) bags.

  For Christmas, I did purchase hay and toys for the bunnies at the rescue that I have adopted 2 bunnies from also and donated gift bags on BunSpace.com too – It’s a great feeling to help out

  I decided against donating money to the shelter I got Dusty (Dusk). I wanted the rabbit division to receive my donation so I contacted a few people there and they loved the idea of the care packages. For $25 I made 40+ packages stuffed with timothy hay, dried cranberries and banana chips. Although I wasn’t able to distribute to each bunny at the shelter, the warm fuzzy feeling I got made everything worth it. Thank you, Markbun for reminding us of those in need of forever homes.
