Hello. I want to make a digging box for my rabbit and I read a bunch that a cardboard box would be great for this. I receive packages often and was wondering if the shipping boxes that my items arrive in can be recycled for this purpose? The reason I’m asking is cause it concerns me a bit due to the fact that I don’t know where the boxes have been and how dirty they really are from being in transit. Thanks.

I should think they’d be fine so long as they aren’t covered in ink/printed.

My understanding is that a box printed with matte ink is all right, it’s glossy ink/paper that’s unsafe for rabbits. I’ve been using cardboard boxes, from the local beer/wine store mostly, to create hidey boxes for Panda and Fernando for the last five months or so and have always taken care to avoid the ones with glossy ink/printing and paper.

Agree regarding the ink. Also, I remove the tape. I don’t think you have to be worried about contamination on the outside of the boxes, but if you want a “fresh” box, there are ones available for purchase at Lowes/HomeDepot for under $2.00.

I give my bunnies amazon boxes, and also boxes from the local grocery shop all the time. I don’t think anything that could get on the outside in transit would cause any problems. in fact it never even occured to me! I’m so neglectful

Thank you everyone for the response! I definitely feel more at ease repurposing my shipping boxes for my rabbit
