My husband had the idea of using cardboard instead of wood/paper pellets for Tambor’s litter. He’s been doing it for 2 weeks now: he collects the cardboard we have a home (cereal boxes, etc) instead of throwing it away, puts it in the litter tray unpainted side up, and covers it with hay. He is changing his litter every day, instead of every 2 days, and so far no smells, no disgusting results or anything weird going on. Tambor is not chewing it at all and he doesn’t seem to have noticed any changes.

I have the feeling that there is a reason why we shouldn’t be using cardboard, but I can’t find it! Is it safe, are we forgetting something? It seems too good to be true, as we will not have to buy litter material any more!

My only concern would be whether it was absorbent enough or whether Tambor would start eating it but if those aren’t a problem I think it’s fine!

I was also worried about it being absorbent enough but, according to hubby, the cardboard is humid but never wet. He also puts a layer of kitchen paper between the cardboard and the hay (1 sheet), I guess that helps

There was talk of newspaper that is old being a bit of a risk with aspergillosis and I suppose one could argue cardboard could be also. Its more of a risk for birds then it is rabbits. But if you’re using cardboard that is stuff you recently had in the household, its probably not a concern.

We had a really old topic on using cardboard as litter. There was even a company selling bales of chopped cardboard for horses!
I’ll post link to old thread here if I can find it.

ETA:  Here it is. Warning: it’s 4 pages long.

This is mainly shredded cardboard but I found a later thread where this member was just using hand torn corrugated cardboard, so it was much larger pieces.

The way you are doing it sounds much simpler for clean up and would work well for just a single bun.
