Can you replace Timothy hay completely?

  I’m just wondering if you can change the hay completely. Or do they always need to have some timothy? Pogo really doesn’t care for it and it just sits there until he spreads it everywhere but he really doesn’t eat much. Can I completely replace it with Teff or Oat?

  Grass hays such as orchard, bluegrass, teff, rye. There’s many. Or cereal hay like oat. Mine only have oat.

  Many people who have allergies to timothy have little or no reaction to other grass hays, so it is a very realistic alternative. My buns have gotten orchard grass exclusively for a long time now, they were just never overly enthusiastic about timothy hay.

  My rabbits cage is lined with Orchard grass hay, and they seem to hardly ever eat the hay I put in their cage hay feeder. I started with Timothy, they hardly touched it. Then I purchased some Oat and Alfalfa. They went after the small amount of Alfalfa right away. They also get free range of the yard for about 4 hrs. a day. Do you think they are eating their bedding and/yard grass which is why they are not eating purchased hay? I’ve read hay is mainstay of their diet. I just want to make sure they are getting plenty of the right thing. They are both healthy looking little guys.

  Just wanted to mention that I too, have had stray hay everywhere when the rabbit pulls it out, eats little of it and just leaves it lying everywhere. No more, since discovered mini-horse hay nylon hay bags. You may have seen this in the “hay routine” thread but am so pleased thought I’d mention it here as well. Cram hay or hays into the net bag, pull the drawstring, tie it on their enclosure and the hay stays tidy behind the sturdy nylon cords yet allow great access to the hay.   http://yhst-92749113215547.stores.y…aybag.html I have the bag resting in Dustor’s big haybox filled shallowly with nothing but hay because he likes to sit on hay as he eats but the haybag keeps it neat and tidy. Dustor AND Petie are seldom away from it for long and they used to be such picky and sedentary hay eaters too. Only about $8 too. Also, I’m giving KleenMama’s Hay a try – their 3rd cut Timothy has gotten great reviews for “hay-nayer” bunnies but I just ordered and it’s on its way.
