…..and 20 below Zero outside! Seriously….why is Boston going through a total sheddown right now??? Is it cuz the heat is on so much, so she doesn’t realize its Winter?
and speaking of being FREEZING COLD….Mimz, if you’re out there……do you even go outside??? How cold is it in Alaska?
LOL!!
Three of our buns at the shelter have started molting and mine have never stopped!!
Edmonton, not as cold as Alaska is getting a warmup !!! We’re normally forty below this time of year (celcius and farenheit) but we got up to six above today Celcius and tomorrows going to eleven!! I’m going riding tomorrow!!
Yeah, Mimz how cold is it there?
six above celsius?!
what a ‘heatwave”…lol!!
here in GA it’s 6 F [around -15 C] right now. tomorrows ‘high’ is calling for around 24 F.
too cold for us!!

I concur! Noelle’s been shedding for over a month now. She started before I left for Christmas break, and it just won’t stop! It’s also super cold here. I think we set records this week, and I know one night it was -56F with the windchill! I nearly froze my fingers off a couple days ago trying to push the buttons at a drive up ATM to deposit a cheque. I couldn’t hit the buttons right with my gloves on so I had to take them off. SO cold! It’s supposed to be up to around the freezing point the next couple days (I’m not really used to Farenheit yet…) so I’m pretty excited for that.
I don’t think the shedding has any rhyme or reason though. We have a couple big fish tanks, so our apartment stays reasonably warm, so we don’t really turn our heat on at all. Maybe an hour before bed if it’s really cold we might turn it on in the bedroom just so it’s warm enough to fall asleep, but it’s definitely not enough to be the cause of Noelle’s perpetual shed!
*blush* Erm, I hate to have to tell you guys, but the Pineapple Express hit us this week and we’re *gulp* ah…about 50 above during the day and 30 above at night. But it’ll stop next week and be back to about -20 Fahrenheit.
We just finished what you guys are going through now. My guess is, as the Earth reaches perigee (closest point to the sun during the winter season) we’re still technically pointed ‘away’ from the sun in the northern Hemisphere and somehow this tweaks the jet stream enough to point all that frigid arctic air down through Alaska and into the states….so for some reason we get to experience the deep cold of space for about two to four weeks every January. Then what’s called a “Chinook” wind blows up from the south and you can smell those trade winds from the South Pacific. Hence why so many folks snowbird to Hawaii or Florida. (Not me, I don’t have that kind of cash.) It’d probably be worse if the situation were reversed and the Earth pointed the northern Hemisphere away from the sun at apogee (the farthest distance from the sun.)
Yeah, the warm weather has melted all our snow pack only enough to make it really slick out there. So I can’t even walk down my driveway without falling on my derriere. The next month or so is going to be dicey for any kind of travel, but at least fuel has come down enough that heating the place isn’t as bad as it could’ve been with oil at that $140 per barrel mark that it was. (A tanker did slide off our main road this afternoon though and traffic was held up for 45 minutes while they dug him out.)
I empathize with you all though. Please be safe, this isn’t weather to fool around with.
And yes, my buns went through a major molt for about a month last year while the heat was up. Now they’ve settled down, but it seemed to go on forever! (Today they actually got to have some nice, fresh air from outside…I can see Mimzy is dreaming of spring already!)
FIFTY DEGREES????? OMG I don’t even remember what that feels like!!!!! Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever experience weather this cold before! Can’t….wait….for….spring!!!!
Yeah, we used to get Chinooks when I lived in Calgary, and I definitely miss them!
K&K you are going riding tomorrow??? Horses ???
Wow you can actually smell the tradewinds that far up? Cool. Yeah here in Florida we been getting freeze warnings in the middle and a few degrees higher than 32 on the east coast. Today is a nice warm 60? or other.
I haven’t used the heater yet. One thing I hate though is taking a shower when it is cold out.
Brrrrr. We have a heat lamp in the bathroom so that helps.
Oooohhhhh…I remember when I was first dating my hubby, we lived at his mom’s motel in Central California on the beach for awhile and all the bathrooms had sunlamps in them. There was no discomfort getting out of the shower with those on.
Now up here we have boiler heat and when the temps go up, the water gets colder because it hasn’t been circulating through the house, so a good twenty minutes of a thirty minute shower is ICE COLD. 0_o And my hands are so dry from the low humidity and the cold weather I think they’re going to crack at the wrists and fall off!
*sending springtime vibes to allenj*
awww thanks Mimz!!!
I live in an apartment and each bedroom has its own heat and heat temp. gauge, as well as a combined gage for living/dining room and the bathroom has its own, so i can keep it toasty warm in there! i tend to take more showers in the winter just so i can warm up!
I totally understand the dry hands thing. 2 of my 3 jobs are food service related. I bet I wash my hands 50 times a day, not even exaggerating! Sometimes they are so cracked, the pain is almost unbearable!!!
ps…got like 20 degrees above 0 here today!!! WOOO! T-shirt weather!!! ![]()
You guyz are just not kidding! 3 out of the 4 are shedding something horrible! Hair has taken over our entire house! Ack!!!
Maybe I should see if my hubby can talk those 3 into being vacuumed! lol Cooper my lop doesn’t seem to mind. I don’t think he even notices. He can be such a mellow bun I still don’t think he knows he is a rabbit.
And Hoopie isn’t molting at all. He has the beautiful blk/brn spots on his white fur. Actually, I have never seen him go thru a big molt like the others?
Geez… I’m never moving out of Southern California! I’m so sorry you guys!!! We just set a new daily record-high yesturday for 85ish dgr F…. It’s fricking hot! I have the windows all open at night to let the cool night breeze in!
Bunnies definitely in a light shed…I’m afraid they think it’s spring, and that it’ll go back to winter next week, and we’ll have to start the whole shedding process over again…and then I’ll cry…
Oh no, LC…those two will be looking like my dog if that happens! 0_o j/k (sends “do not shed” vibes your way)
How in the world do you have 85 degrees?? Santa Ana winds coming up again? That’s crazy for January, even in So. Cal. >_< Maybe that's where our trade winds went to.
We got a good dusting of snow last night…put about half a foot on the ground. Now I don’t fall on my keyster when I walk the dogs.
Yep, MM, Santa Anas for the last 2 weekends…Luckily no nut-cases have taken the opportunity to set anything on fire. But they shut down a lot of the parks/rec areas/mountain trails just in case… We drove all the way to Malibu last weekend to do a hide, to find that they had clamped the whole area down and nobody was allowed in. They DO NOT mess around with those areas during Santa Anas anymore!
It is not normal, you’re right…I have no idea what this will mean for Spring/Summer… Global warming is a beeotch…
I think we’re going for the hootest summer on record here, it’s been like above 95 dgr F for the last few weeks on and off, usually during summer we only hit 80F. We all think we’re dying and the bunnies have taken up residency in the laundry. Global warming hey! I like sumemr but this is ridiculous! Since Canberra rarely has aircon buildings cause it’s not necessary and my work is like a big cement oven!
Layla is shedding again, her coat is so thick I feel really bad for her, but Charlie isn’t, thank goodness!
