My name is Thomas I live in Las Vegas I have a lion head rabbit who is 3 years old his name is Simba. Two days ago I woke up, and I saw Simba with his face in the water bowl and it looked like something was not right. That is when I noticed a boil or a lump on the side of his face that is attached to his mouth, I tried to get the best pictures I could but he is very hard to catch. I just want to know, obviously I need to get him checked out but if anybody has any idea what this could be or what I can do until the vet can see him, which will be two days I would like to keep him out of pain the best

I can if anybody has any tips it would be greatly appreciated. . It looks like to me he doesn’t even have any teeth anymore, which is so weird because he used to have all four not too long ago and I check his face often and usually have him on my lap 5 or 6 times a week I don’t know how I didn’t notice this I am crying I feel so sad about this I can barely even think straight.

It looks like it could be an abscess. They can appear very rapidly (I had one pop up in my bun in 24 hours). Swelling of the face can make it hard to see the teeth, so I’m guessing that’s why you can’t really see them well.

Is he eating and pooping OK? Showing any signs of pain? The main thing will be just to make sure he is getting food into him so he doesn’t go into stasis until you can get him to the vet. You should get him to the vet ASAP, but I realize with it being the weekend there will be limited options until Monday.

If he is having trouble chewing, you can try offering pellet mash or critical care. If he doesn’t eat on his own you will need to syringe feed him, which might be challenging with the swelling.

He is not having trouble eating at all the last two days, but three days ago when I first saw that he had something on his face when he was putting his face in the water, he looked like he was in tremendous pain I thought he was going to die that night. I lay with him on the floor and slept with him the whole night and the next morning it was like he was healed up it was crazy. But now I am starting to see that he is in pain and I don’t know if it is severe pain or not but I really would like to help him out if I could before I get him to the vet. He is eating fine, he is going to the bathroom fine it is just he is making noises that he has never made before when I lay with him I can tell that he is in pain and I cannot stand to see it. So if anybody knows any way that I could get rid of his pain for the next couple days, I would appreciate it so much.

Aw I’m sorry this is happening. Are you able to get him to a vet soon? I don’t know how to relieve pain in rabbits other than meds. I would just make sure he is still eating, drinking, and pooping while waiting to get into the vet.

My bunny Muffin had a rash with a bump and scabs around his mouth a few weeks ago. He was still eating and drinking, and the vet gave me meds that cleared it up. I thought he was dying too. Don’t lose hope, the vet should be able to figure something out to help him. Just try to keep him comfortable with soft mats and blankets on the floor. And keep things calm in his environment to avoid stressing him out more than he needs. Wishing you the best!

An ER vet may be able to prescribe pain meds, even if they aren’t rabbit specialists. Metacam is the most common pain med for rabbits.

I’m glad he is eating and pooping ok. Hoping you can get him in to the vet first thing tomorrow. Often rabbit vets will make time in their schedule for serious illness, so if you call around and they say they can’t see you keep pushing them (you might even be able to send pictures).

Hmm… this is interesting. I’m wondering, since it’s protruding from inside the mouth/cheek, if this is an oral papilloma. It’s hard to tell from the photo. As Dana said, it could be an abscess as well.
