        Hi,

I have a 6 month year old holland lop bunny. Every once in awhile we feed him whole gran Cherios as a treat and he LOVES them. He gets very excited when he knows that he is going to get some. Is this bad for thim or his diet?

Yes this is extremely bad and very unhealthy!!!!!  Please see "Diet" under Bunny Info above for foods a rabbit should eat.  Their diet should only consist of unlimited hay, greens, a small amount of pellets and a bit of fruit.  A bunny absolutely should not be eating processed foods!  Believe me, he will get very excited for a tiny piece of carrot or apple too!

Generally cereals are too high in starch and can upset a bunny’s digestive system.  They are "bunny junk food"

One or two might not hurt but in general small bits of dried fruit (the kind with no added sugar) like raisins, craisins, or bits of papaya or pineappe are a healthier treat – and again in moderation.

Hello Casper – welcome to Binky Bunny!

When I first rsearched rabbits, I had also heard of people giving their bunny cheerioes, however, as others have mentioned, its not really a natural food for bunnies and may upset their stomach, so try testing out some new treats – I’m sure your bunny will love to learn about some new treats My bunnies really love a bit of banana, blueberries, grapes, raisins, carrot pieces, and apple pieces. It is a good idea to only give them treats about 3-4 times a week, and just an iiittty bit at a time. Rabbits’ have very sensitive stomachs, and they can become very sick very fast if their digestive system gets messed up, so its a good idea to stick to the bunny diet on this site, which corresponds with the one for the House Rabbit Society (www.rabbit.org).

So tell us a bit about your bunny! What does he look like? Where did you get him from?

My bunny vet gives her rabbit cheerios! Just one as a treat. I have never had, and was not about to start. It is hard to limit my guy to one of anything. He is such a mooch.

As others have suggested, you may want to try a bit of banana as a treat instead. I am convinced that bananas are “bunny crack.” Whenever Cadbury sees one, she goes NUTS – running around me, jumping up my leg, honking, etc. She only gets a tiny bit, but she’s so happy!!

my rabbits absolutely love dried apple strips and will even stand up on their hind legs and walk for them. banana is also another favorite of theirs. i will cut a small slice for each rabbit and then sit on the floor on the opposite side of the room and it will take less then 10 seconds before i have two rabbits charging at me full force. marvin is usually content to eating his in front of me, but jessica will snatch her piece from me and run off somewhere before devouring it.

/there was one time when my wife was eating some spongebob cereal dry out of a bowl while sitting on the ground. our departed rabbit george took it upon himself to help himself to some of the cereal. it was very amusing.
