        1. Shiitake Mushrooms (I think I spelled that wrong)
        2. Green Peppers
        3. Onions
        4. Corn
        5. Cauliflower.

Are those all safe for bunnies to eat? The first one is because my mom’s gonna be getting that for a party and any left over, she’d just feed to bunny every now and then, the rest are things my grandparents grow and Simba’s gonna be there for a week and I want to make a list of things he can and cannot eat for them so they don’t accidentally feed him something bad.  This is the first time we would leave Simba, we’re going on vacation and can’t take him to the cabin, we can’t take the dogs either, so my grandparents get all the animals. I’m so worried they might feed him something he can’t eat. Also the poor guy’s probably gonna be cooped up in his cage the whole time But once we get home, he’ll be out as much as possible. Haha, I’m so worried, my mom told me to make up proportions if I’m so worried they won’t feed him the right amount so I have 16 little baggies of food (I feed him a little less than 1/4 a cup of food twice a day and a certain amount of veggies.) and I’m gonna make up bags of veggies for them. He’s my first rabbit since I was really young and I’m just taking every precaution I can. Even if I get made fun of for being so protective…

I wouldn’t feed a rabbit mushrooms, corn or onions. Green peppers are fine and cauliflower is fine for a lot of buns, but some it can make gassy, so you want to maybe introduce him to it before you leave him with an inexperienced care giver that would be feeding it to him.

Alright thanks, we should have green peppers and cauliflower left over from the party so I’ll give him bits and pieces. Thanks so much.

              Green peppers are Pablos favorite!
              Cauliflower is also a fave
I agree. No mushrooms or onions. But corn was in Pablo’s old food and it says it makes a very soft coat.
              I say it’s okay. But I don’t know 100%

Alright, well I’ll just tell them no corn at all. And Simba likes almost anything he eats. (Especially the dog food! We have to put it up or else he’ll get into it.) I’d swear he was a pig, not a bunny. But I love him nonetheless.

Corn is favored by companies, Pandora, cause it is a cheap filler. It’s not expensive for them to get, it’s high in carbs so fills the animals up, but low nutrition so it’s not really that great for them, but means more profit off selling that bag of food. That is why it’s in so many products – dog foods, cat foods, rabbit foods, etc. Most higher quality feeds for animals will leave it out in place of more nutritious ingredients. And for veggie snacks, there are much better alternatives.

                    Okay Sticker Never knew that!
I don’t feed it to him anymore, but thanks for the information!

Shiitake Mushrooms (I think I spelled that wrong) -I wouldn’t
Green Peppers-Absolutely, though it took a while for mine to like them
                      Onions-no
Corn-some risk, better safe than sorry to not feed this
                      Cauliflower.-absolutely

I ended up leaving him with my older sister with approved veggies proportioned out, but I’ll never do that again, she left the state! Even though it was a day trip, she still left Simba alone, and she doesn’t close his cage door correctly. (We’re in the process of building a new one, but his current one has a broken latch so we use binder clips to keep it closed) He knows how to open it and when we came home, he was out and about in the back room because he opened his cage. Also, she brought a snake into our house that’s bigger than Simba, if I recall correctly, that snake also is an escape artist. It scares me to know that they both could have got out and the snake could have ate Simba… I think I might just save up the money for next year to hire a sitter that has experience with rabbits, because apparently my 20 year old sister isn’t responsible enough to do so. She didn’t give him his hay every day (There was enough for each day, and only 2 out of 8 of the bags were emptied.) she neglected my pet and that makes me angry and even more distrustful of her. I hate that I can’t trust my own sister with a simple task of feeding my rabbit, changing his litter and water, and letting him out for a bit each day. I know she left him out though, there was piles of poop in his favorite spots, which she didn’t clean up until I told her to….

That’s horrifying! D: I’m SO glad that snake didn’t get out either. How irresponsible for her to do that. True, rabbits don’t need someone there 24/7 but really, she should have double checked the cage and took far better care of him, especially when you had the food ready to go. She didn’t even have to portion it herself! I’m glad bun was all right. <3

I’m glad he is okay, too. But my problem with her leaving is that she left early in the morning and didn’t get back til late at night, so I’m not sure if she fed him that day or got someone to feed him… My mom made her get rid of the snake though. I just hate that I can’t trust my own sister with such a simple task. I actually had to email my therapist because it stressed me out and I don’t see her for another week yet.  Simba’s like a therapy bunny to me because I have really bad anxiety (That’s the worst of my issues) and he helps me when I have attacks. And if something happened to him, I’d be really upset, he’s been calm and loving from the moment we got him and his personality is something of its own, he’s not startled easily and he loves to be outside, even though there’s loud cars he doesn’t even flinch (We checked to see if he’s deaf and he’s not) We couldn’t possibly find another rabbit like him. D: I kinda went off on a bit of a rant, but yeahhh. I don’t like when people mistreat my pets, she didn’t even tell us she was leaving, and she has a junk car, so she could have broke down somewhere and not got home for another couple days while it was fixed and Simba wouldn’t have been fed for a couple days if that happened. :/

I’m sorry you had a bad experience. Unfortunately, this isn’t always uncommon with family or friend pet sitters. And depending on the person’s view of your pet, they may feel that since it’s “just a rabbit”, it doesn’t really matter if it doesn’t get fed for a day. I would absolutely recommend you begin thinking about either pet-sitting services or boarding. You can start gathering info now, and if possible, interview pet-sitters so when the time comes for another trip, you don’t feel rushed into making a decision. This will also be important in case you need to go out of town suddenly.

Where in PA are you from?! I’m from Pittsburgh and I know a GREAT lady who works at the Humane Society. She’s my boss’s wife also and she LOVES bunnies. I know the state is pretty large so it’s more possible that you’re extremely far away but if you happen to be close to Pittsburgh she’s GREAT for bunny-sitting! She took care of mine for a week while I was out of town and my buns were happy little critters when I got back! And she gave me updates every day!

I live just outside Pittsburgh, actually, about an half hours drive from Pittsburgh. I’ll have to tell my mom if we go on vacation next year.  Of course, I’ll need her info.

OMG. So perfect! If she can’t do it — you can always leave your little guy with me also! I’m so picky about my buns and what they get to eat and such — he’d be safe here, no problems! And we have an emergency vet we take ours too — and our vet is PHENOMENAL with buns so he’d be a good hands for sure! What vet do you currently use? If you need one ours is in Robinson — not sure if you’re on that side or the other side but Dr. Keffer with the Robinson Animal Hospital is SOOOO good.

I can’t think of the name we use because he was only there once (We’ve only had him since christmas, but we’re getting him fixed soon so that maybe we could get him a friend soon.) I’m not sure where Robinson is, but I’m near Westmoreland county. (I don’t want to say exactly where.) I didn’t exactly like the one we went to though, he didn’t seem that nice. So we’re looking for someone to neuter him and also be his long term vet.
