Yesterday, we woke up to find a dead kit and bloody bedding in Daisy’s cage. We have had the rabbit for eleven days and did not know that she was pregnant. We noticed the day before that she was acting strangely and pulling her hair out. We thought that she was just molting and were extremely confused. She is still pulling hair out and acting strange. She does not like it when we touch her stomach. Also, her pee is bloody. I have read that it is unusual for a rabbit to have just one baby, and when they do have just one, it tends to be very large. Her baby was normal size. I’m thinking that this baby died in the womb, so she gave birth, but still has a kit or two in her belly. We are very confused and do not know what to do. Could she possibly be pregnant?

Hi ILma_daisy. I noticed you tried to post this twice, so I rejected the earlier requested topic. The text from that one is below, since it offers additional information:

“My bunny gave birth to one kit that died a few days ago after she had been pulling out her hair and acting strange for a couple of days. We didn’t know she was pregnant because we just got her eleven days ago, so it was a complete surprise. After the birth she is still pulling hair out and acting strange. We even saw dark, reddish pee in her cage. I know that it is unusual for a rabbit to have just one baby, and when they do, the kit is especially large. Her baby was normal size. I’m thinking that the baby could have died in the womb, so she went ahead and gave birth?????”

You should take Daisy to the vet to see if she still may be pregnant with live bunnies, or to see if she has any dead fetuses inside. If she has live babies in her, hopefully she can deliver them safely. If she has any dead fetuses inside, they will need to be removed before infection sets in and Daisy is affected. I have no personal experience with pregnant rabbits or litters, but there have been a couple of rabbits that came into the Sanctuary where I volunteer, who were ill from the necrotic tissue and infection of dead fetuses that were in their uterus.
