Wally spent the night at the hospital last night with stasis. He is now eating and pooping. He took cisapride this morning around 7 any I picked him up with instructions to give him meds again at 7 pm (cisapride and metacam). He was very excited when he first got home and checked out every single one of his belongings and now he’s over there cuddling with his brother. He ate some hay, pellets and salad since returning. I noticed a wet spot by his tail and after checking him more closely he has some poo in his hair. We cleaned it as best we could with a washcloth but it was actually pretty dry so has been there for a little while. Could cisapride cause some of his poos to have been wet? He had a very stressful 2 days so could the car ride home have stressed him enough to cause it? Could it just be the result of his intestines starting up again?
I did call the vet but the exotic specialist is not in right now and the other vet just said to watch his poo and call if any more is extremely wet or runny. He just made one turd which was slightly small but well formed and a little damp. I’m just trying to figure out how concerned I should be about that. He’s now over there eating some hay.

Edit: I found a few other fresh turds that are also well formed and only slightly damp. I gave him his night metacam and cisapride and he is still muching hay. It’s been about 10 minutes. He keeps kind of half squatting like he’s thinking about pooping so I’m not sure if maybe he just needs the pain meds to kick in, like maybe his tum was starting to hurt.

          Poor baby 🙁

As long as he’s pooping and it isn’t totally liquid, I wouldn’t be too concerned. Mucous in poops can happen after stasis, and he also could have a bit of cecal imbalance. You might see some weird poops while things come back online. Medications can also cause buns not to eat their cecals, so it could have been a mushed up cecal that he didn’t eat. If you saw some more well formed poops after that is a good sign. He might appreciate some tummy rubs if he is feeling very crampy.

Thank you so much! I don’t think he will appreciate the belly rubs as he hates being held and has been manhandled for 2 days lol he just took his metacam and is splooted out, and has been nibbling consistently since he got home.

Eating and splooting sound like he’s feeling better!

It is common for the first real poop after a bout of stasis to be sticky and unformed. Cisapride causes the intestines to move, which is the reason  you give cisapride to stasis buns. So in a way the cisapride is partly responsible for this, but its a good thing. You may see weird poop now for the next 2 weeks or so, until the tummy is in balance again.

It sounds very positive that he’s active and eating and pooping 🙂

Thanks guys! He’s being a little weird this morning hanging out in his litter box instead of eating pellets and salad but he is eating hay in there so I think he’s alright. Just weirds me out because he’s a little piggy and normally inhales his pellets 🙂

When my rabbit has mushy poo the rabbit specialist vet I go to reccomend hay and dried foods only for two weeks to return the gut flora to normal. This may not be possible for you due to the gi stasis if your rabbit has a poor appetite. As its more important to keep them eating anything rather than nothing at all.

Thank you for the info! He only had the one gross poo and has seemed totally fine since. I’m actually shocked at how fast he bounced back from this since the vet told me he had no gut sounds at all when I dropped him off. My other bun had stasis 3 times and was always a bit under the weather for a few days but Wall was a-ok starting on day 2.

That’s lovely! I’ve had the same thing happening with my bun Bam, stasis that resolved with a big splotch of gooey poo, then everything was fine again 😊
