I want to make my bunnies some homemade wooden toys with safe wood and twine but want to be able to make them look more than just wood. I do wood burning and was wondering if I did some of that for there toys would be okay? For example if I make a wood caterpillar and burn spots to look like eyes, would that be safe for them to still chew on?

Hi Bumble! I don’t know much about wood burning as a practice but my only worry off the bat would be if the buns go to chew on the toy and they inadvertently consume carcinogens in the burned wood. I’m not sure if it’s an amount that is overly concerning (i.e. when we eat a little burnt toast it likely isn’t a big deal), but making it a normal part of their chew toys might not be advisable long-term for health if there’s a lot of burned parts on the wooden toy.

I would think that burning on eyes etc would be perfectly fine. Keep it minimal and away from edges and raised pieces where they’re less likely to be able to chew and you shouldn’t have any problems 🙂
