Can bunnies eat too much cardboard?

Fiver and Pip REALLY love their cardboard tubes. They usually could destroy at least one a day if I let them.

How much cardboard is too much? I don’t want any of my bunnies getting blockages.

I freak out at this too cause Charlie just adores cardboard and he eats it! So I took all cardboard away from him after the stasis scare and haven’t gven it back. Now it didn’t actually cause the stasis, I hope, I’m pretty sure that was the pellets, but I’m not taking any chances with my bab’s life!

But…if the cardboard is ok I would love to give him his favourite toys back.

As far as I know it’s completely fine…untreated no chemicals and edible. If it weren’t ok there is no way the maze haven would be sold here!!! I’m sure cardboard is OK

In our instructions, we have a caution section that says eating cardboard is okay, but if your bunny eats large quantities to take the cardboard away.  We say this as a precaution because even though cardboard is fine AS LONG as it does not have wax coating, has no ink or at least  has safe inks, and the glues that are used for the inside corregation are corn starch based, we just want people to keep an eye on their own rabbit’s health.
It’s important that rabbits also have a high fiber diet and since we can’t control the diet, then we err on the side of  extra caution even though cardboard as stated above, does not usually cause a problem.

i have found that when a lot of the cardboard is chewed it’s usually just in a big messy pile… if you’re concerned, you can give them their cardboard when you’re home to supervise.

what i’ve done recently is get a narrow, long box and i closed up one end, and then stuffed it full of newspaper, binkybunny packing paper, and a phone book. they went to town shredding everything and digging/burrowing. it was more fun for them than a plain box.

i’ve also stuffed a section of the maze with newspaper. this diverted them from chewing the maze for a bit…

Oh I put things in my maze too!! I put sticks, paper, toilet paper rolls and some treats in there!

Mine definitely do eat some cardboard but alot gets left for the maid (me) to clean up!

Mine eat some but I do still find pieces all over.  Yes their maid just cleaned their areas today.  Oh to be a bunny maid.

Okay guys, thanks so much! Yeah, I give Pip about half a cardboard paper towel tube every once in awhile and she can usually eat it down to about half of the half. She chews on boxes I put in the xpen for them to lay in, but that cardboard is usually left in pieces inside the box, so they use it kind of like bedding. They always chew the same part of the box too, right in the middle of the entrance or exit. I think that Pip needs to be able to get her big belly through the opening a little easier. ^_^

Fiver just ate almost all of a half paper towel roll tube in the last few days. But he also loves his hay too much to just make a meal out of the tube.
As far as the tubes are concerned, I never see any pieces of those left over. They’re definitely swallowing them. Except for Mimzy, who doesn’t seem to care for it one way or other. I don’t know if he just doesn’t care for cardboard anymore or if he is still having tooth probs.
