Hey everyone!  Wow, I haven’t been here in a while!

I adopted a female mini-rex from the SPCA a year ago and she was very young.  I would assume she is now a little over a year old.  She was spayed by the SPCA.  We are a 1-rabbit household, and she’s been just happy with that.  She get s a huge puppy x-pen all to herself.  She’s been a great rabbit, very affectionate and took to litterbox training well.

It’s only been 2 or 3 days ago that her behavior has changed.  She uses her litterbox, but she also makes sure she drops pellets all over her “room” and she has peed on the floor in 2 other corners in addition to her litterbox.  Also, she’s gotten grumpy.  She started growling when I would open the door to put food in her cage.  But then she would get excited once she found out it was food and was happy again.  She seems happy when she gets out to run around the house.  She would only let me pet her when she’s out of the cage.

Last night, I went to feed her to find big clumps of fur was all along the side wall of her cage.  I’d never seen her do this before.  She growled as I picked her up, but she didn’t try to bite me.  I turned her over and investigated where it could have come from.  I couldn’t find any bald spots.  I took the fur out and tossed it.  I fed her and went to bed.

Today, I went back in to find more balls of fur in the same area of the cage.  Also, she still was pooping pellets all over her floor.  Not only that, but she was already growling as I approched the door of the cage.  I opened the door and she started acting like she was going to charge after me.  I mean, she did jump forward after me a couple times, but she was bluffing and trying to scare me off.  I grabbed her bowl really quickly and took it out to fill it up and quickly put it back in.  The food distracted her a bit as I  grabbed the clumps of fur.  She still growled as I was in her cage.

I kept trying to look this up, but the only thing that would come up in my research are these false pregnancies.  The main solution was to have her spayed.  But the problem is she IS spayed.  I couldn’t really find anything that said spayed females can also feel this way.  Do you know what else it could be?  Our routines haven’t changed, nor has her diet.  I feel rejected by her.

I would get her to a vet ASAP. Sudden changes in behavior like can indicate something medically wrong… especially if there is no other option of what could be causing the strange behavior.

Ditto that ^. She could be harbouring a UTI or something else. Fur pulling can be a stress thing too. I have heard of false pregnancies of spayed Does but it’s not common. Did you get a certificate to say she was spayed? (…it did run through my mind that if she and Hailey weren’t actually spayed, that would answer alot of questions-though I know this is not likely.)  Also, I have heard of incomplete spay where ovarian tissue is left behind. These scenarios are all not common occurances so I think getting a basic check up would be first thing to do. Welcome back! Pictures???!!!

when I adopted her, both of their bellies were shaved and the spay wounds were still healing up, so I’m pretty sure they spayed them.

Today, she seems back to her normal self. She let me clean her cage and wanted to get out and run around. She let me pet her and all. There wasn’t any fur pulling today. I’m still keeping my eye on her. I cleaned her cage out while she was running around. Then I took her litterbox downstairs to clean it and put fresh litter in. By the time I got back upstairs, she had hopped in her pen, dropped pellets in every corner and her bed, and then peed in the corner that the litterbox usually goes. She didn’t poop anywhere else in the room she was running around in, she had to hop back into the pen and seems like she wants to mark her territory.

As far as everything else, she’s acting herself again. It was definitely time to clip her nails and we did that tonight. I wonder if she knew her nails were getting long and was upset about it?

I’m going to look up more info on that UTI and see if it fits with her bathroom habits.

I can’t believe I’ve had her for a year and there’s still so much to learn! lol

Oh yeah, I definitely need to get some new pics of her. She’s got a little chubby roll around her neck now. lol

I can’t agree with this or stress this enough. I really doubt she was that upset about her nails-sorry. My guess? She’s either in pain, very sick, or they did not spay her, or did not spay her properly (ie. did not remove both ovaries and uterus-it can happen). Just guesses-I don’t want to upset you but this is a darastic change in behavior and warrants a vet visit asap -please keep us posted!
