Does anyone know the difference between a Californian and Himalayan? My lil Potato was listed as Himalayan by the humane society but I’m not not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

The basic difference is size. They are both white with the dark points and red eyes. Humane Societies and Rescues aren’t always the best at rabbit breeds – they do the best they can though and sometimes it’s just a guessing game since they have very limited information about the animals.

A Californian is usually up to about 10 pounds (could be more) – I believe the Himalayan breed is usually around 5 pounds.

I found these two descriptions on line, which is what Sarita said. I think it wil be about a year before you’ll see your bunny at their full growth, which will tell you which it is. Although, once you get to 6 lbs. you probably have a Californian. I love both breed’s coloring. Sammy is similar, though she’s a mutt, and she’s still growing – I’m waiting for her to stop, she’s getting big!

            Himilayan
            2.5-4.5 lbs (1.1-2 kg)
Black, blue, chocolate, lilac. Coloration develops on cooler extrmities – ears, nose, tail, feet and legs.

            Californian
            8-12 lbs (3.6-4.5 kg)
White, with black nose, ears, feet and tail.
Rounded body, medium build, and short smooth coat.
