What would an accurate size cage be for a holland lop? I’m getting a little guy in a week or two and I’m making my own cage aprtly out of organize it cubes, but I’m not sure how many to buy. What would a good comfortable size for him be?

I made a cage for my bonded pair out of the cubes and it was 3 panels long by 2 panels wide by 2 panels high. It had two levels, well 3 if you include the floor. If you click on Bunny Info and select “cool habitats” you can see a bunch that other people have made.

Oh thanks!! I really need to start looking around at this site more before I ask questions! You can do such cool things with bunny cages, I’m excited to get started.

i made 2 enclosures out of the NIC cubes too.  mine took between 30 & 45 panels each but they can be done with less depending on your design.  also, i used panels for the floors & covered them with palstic sign board.  i got my ideas from looking thru the ‘cool habitats’ links

These are some great ideas here. I would make it as big as you possibly can. Welcome!

Also make sure you have everything else you will need to make the cage – most importantly cable ties. This are excellent for reinforcement to hold everything super tight. I also used dowels to support the upper levels (cut to size – Home Depot), appropriate flooring for your levels and clips to close the doors.

While we are discussing clips (well, I am anyway!) I just thought I would mention a story. A friend of mine unfortunately lost her bunny due to an accident. The bunny managed to squeeze her head between the bars and ended up struggling and dying. So please, make sure when you use anything to close your cages, that they are closed very tightly and a bunny cannot squeeze their head or other body part in between.

i will second what knowltons said, make it as large as you can to fit the space you have. that way you don’t have to take it apart and build a larger one in a few months. where are you putting it?

also i would suggest you buy more cubes than you will need for the cage. they are spectacular for bunny-proofing areas of your home.

Buy more than you think you’ll need. I keep finding new uses for them, like blocking off the bottom of our bed or keeping her away from the video game cables.

For several of my bunny access doorways, not the doors for them to go out and hip hop in the open, I use loosened pieces from the rag rugs.  I tie them shut.  Leo loves to play w/ those and his rag rugs.  I did not get the plastic stuff for my floors.  I used cardboard on top of the grids and cover w/ rag rugs.  It is definately a lot of fun building the bunny condo.  I try to keep extra panels around as well, to block areas off, make additional cubbies, whatever…they are the best!

also, buy a load and make ur cage till u think its a suitable size and the ones u have left, take back with the reciept, as big as you can afford/fit in your home is the best really, i dont think there is a specific size

Okay hah, I finished! I will post pictures later. I made it 3 pieces by 2 and two stories. I wanted to add anotehr story but my husband told me two was good and now he wants a 4 story!! lol. Anywho, I put two doors on it so I can access from the top and bottom and I used some extra vynal flooring that we had cause I figure it will be a lot easier to clean and we are going to put a tarp or something underneath the whole thing and the pen which I haven’t made yet. But I am going to Target to get more cubes since I didn’t have anough money to get all of the ones I wanted. $13 for 23 pieces!! And my husband got the ties from work for free so I basically built the cage for $26! WAY BETTER than paying $100 for one that is actually smaller! lol. I built it myself and my husband is all proud of me but I don’t know why because that is probably the easiest thing I’ve ever built and it will be so much easier to clean than what I was going to build!!

*GASP* Beka you selfish gal you!!! Bookshelves, really now, that is just appalling!

Oh I also suggest you build a platform to affix wheels (castors) to the bottom to scoot it around easily, especially for cleaning.  If you place it directly on the floor get some indoor/oudoor carpet or other material to place the cage on to prevent scratching just like you have planned.   You MUST take some pictures for us to see!   That is funny, 2 stories and now he wants 4. LOL

I hope your hubby has a speedy recovery!

Beka, if you keep up this inappropriate behavior, we will be forced to invalidate your bunny slave card!  The next thing we know, you’ll be buying cat toys for cats and baby toys for babies!  Where will it end!

Good going, xkitxgirx.  There is a nice sense of accomplishment when you figure out how everything goes together and you are able to look at your bunny enjoying your work.  The great thing is now if you get tired of the design, or want to add or change something, you can just snip the cable ties and rearrange as often as you like.

A basic rule of thumb is that you want to give them a minimum of one square foot per pound of bun. I find making it a bit larger and giving more than one level makes them alot happier though.

that sounds like a good rule of thumb markus.   my condos are about 9 sqft and 10.5 sqft for a 5lb and 7.5lb bunny.

i really don’t understand why they call them organize-it cubes or storage cubes.  they should be called by their proper name… rabitat cubes!
