I want to start building a pen for the rabbits I’m going to get but I’m not sure how big it needs to be. I am not sure about the breed of rabbit I am getting but since I am thinking about Flemish Giants I want to make sure the cage is a good size for them. My last rabbit had a x-pen but I am thinking that that would be to small for a giant breed of rabbit and the cats use to go in it to use his litterbox and I want to avoid that this time.

a NIC cube cage would probably be your best bet if you want to try and keep the cats out and you would want to make it at least 4 times the size of the rabbit you get. I know that Flemmies can get pretty large and I saw from your other post that you are thinking about getting a pair. what I would take into account is how much space can you provide for them? Once you figure that out then you will be able to decided on which breed would be the best for you. ^_^

With flemish giants, you need a lot of space. Much more than a pen or condo. Do have a room that can be turned into a bunny-proofed space for them, rather than giving them an official cage or pen?

An NIC condo would not be adequate for a Flemish Giant at all. I think a pen that is open and free roam once they learn how to use the litter box would be your best bet if he can be protected in a rabbit proofed room when you are not home. You could even do 2 x-pens together for one Flemmie to hang out in when you are not home. I don’t think Flemmies would be good at jumping or going up ramps. They may jump on beds or couches but they would need a very large and high space to jump from a ramp in a condo – and a condo is just not adequate for this breed.

If I had a flemmy, I would simply rabbit proof the house and let him have free reign. In fact….hmmmm….

Any chance you can dedicate a room in the house or even half a room to the bunny?

The pen would just be for until they learned to use the litter box and if I need to put them up for some reason. I plan on making my room safe for them to stay out in all of the time after they know to pee in the litter box.

Here is a picture of my pair’s pen.  It is made from two Midwest 36 inch xpens joined together.  The dimensions are 4 by 8 feet.  It is in the “computer room” and takes up a little less than half the space.

I wouldn’t do anything smaller than that for Flemish Giants, and that is with A LOT of exercise time outside of the pen.  What size space and how many rooms will they have access to?  Will the whole house or at least the floor they are on be bunny-proofed?

Are you hinting what I think you’re hinting? O.o

I agree, an x-pen would be best, if you can’t go free reign.
