Cage ideas & Boredom busters!

Hey everyone,

Looking for a few new ideas for peanuts cage. I currently have around 36 c&c squares to work with, which at the moment, are arranged into a 6×3 L shape with a 2×2 second level.
I was wondering if anyone could share pics of their cage setups, as I look at the picture thread and see some lovely perfectly neat cages! (peanuts is a mess again 5 mins after ive cleaned it.)

I was wondering which materials work best for people, flooring etc. What you guys use for hay storage, litter boxes/trays and material too.

Does anyone provide diggy boxes either? If so, what do you use as peanut just uses his as a secondary place to poop!

Also, if anyone has any ideas for boredom busting (hes an only bun.) That would be great!

I don’t have any pics of the cages. We have 4 cages (7 buns!) And they are not the same. One is a large dog kennel, one is made with storage squares( wire cubes) one is kind of like an open closet area, and the other is a dog kennel/wire cube hybrid. We use wood pellets for litter and just use regular kitty litterboxes (except Obie..he’s picky, so he has a metal tray lol) right now, they are on hard wood floors. They have carpet squares to lay on/get some traction. In the past we have used wood board( like peg board without holes) and linoleum. Eventually we will get something to cover the wood floors with…they’re kinda making a mess of it. hmmm, boredom busters….well, toys like wire balls and baby keys are good. Phone books great for digging and tearing. Something to hide under, crawl through or climb on. Plus, maybe this is weird, but our buns have always like watching tv. Hope that hellps!

Sadly, I don’t use C&C cubes so I won’t be able to help you there. D:

For flooring, I bought some laminate “hardwood” panels from LumberLiquidators.com for $15. They’re awesome! Super easy to clean and they look really nice if you see part of them. On top of those, I have a few cotton towels for softness. At the moment, I also have a big piece of cardboard at the pen entrance, because Theodore managed to spill his automatic waterer before I placed in the corner where he couldn’t do that anymore. That waterer is from PetMate and is the .75 gallon size. It isn’t pictured here because the pic was taken before I got it, but I do highly recommend them! When they’re full and placed in a corner, they’re basically impossible for bun to tip over.

I got his litterbox at a pet supply site, it’s originally intended for cats but of course works great for Theodore. Just above that, on the cage bars, I have a little basket zip tried to the bars. I put fresh hay in here for him to munch on, which works great.

I do not have any digging boxes for Theodore at the moment but I’m strongly considering making him one. There are some great tutorials for these on YouTube!

As for boredom busters, your general selection of toys does the trick, but more challenging things are good for the active bun. One thing I do with Theodore is take a paper towel or toilet paper roll, cit small holes in the sides and push in the ends, and put a few pellets inside. He loves to mess with this to get them out!

Moving to Habitats and Toys.
I will try to get some cage pics ASAP.
For boredom busters, I would recommend homemade toys, most baby toys, and cat toys (especially the treat balls.) Most bunnies are very food-motivated so treat dispensing toys are a big hit.

For toys and boredom busters I figured my bun enjoys the simplest things like toilet roll stuffed with goodies, she is an only bun too but she also loves the natural woodland toys, which you can easily purchase from pet store

My Holland, Midas, doesn’t like to chew on cardboard.. He is a bit weird :p anyway, I found that just a brown paper bag stuffed with pellets, hay, and treats, he loves it. It is easy to rip to shreds, and bunnies will typically do anything for food
