I should rename my bunny Houdini. I keep him in his condo when I’m away from the house and sleeping. He seems fine in there because he has a lot of room (as a matter of fact he’s sleeping in there right now even though the door is open.) And he’s out a LOT. However the other morning he came hopping in my room and woke me up… I was confused and thought that since there were people at my house late the night before, maybe someone left his door open after I went to sleep.

NO! Because this morning he came into my room to greet me again and there is nobody here but me… I am shocked. I’m worried because I know he chowed down on cat food (that’s the main reason he can’t be out all the time.) I know he’s nibbled on it before but I’m sure this time with me sleeping he just filled up. Ugh.

Here’s the clasp on his door:

I figured out how he did it. If I pull the door out the bottom of the hook catches and then it snaps back the other way, opening the door. However I’m shocked that a 3.5 lb bunny was able to exert enough force! I’ve heard of rabbits figuring out how to get out of almost anything before, I guess it’s true. I’m going to buy another identical clasp and attach it either the same direction, or maybe in the opposite direction, adding more force to the door being closed. What do you think would work better? Or maybe put one higher up by each door so he’s unable to exert enough pressure to open it? I’m not good with mechanical stuff but I think that would work. I appreciate any ideas, I’m sure those members who don’t have free-range bunnies have experience with escape artists.

I used clamps to keep Hugo in his pen at night. It was the only thing that worked for him. You can get them at any hardware store. They worked really well on the condo I have a few years ago. We kept the doors and top closed with them. They are 1″ spring clamps. Here’s a link for one at Lowe’s.

Oh that’s a great idea, thanks for the suggestion! That will definitely work. I’m proud of Bun-Bun for being so clever… but I can’t have this being a regular occurence.

Those clasps look like a good idea. Bun-Bun is definitely smarter than the average rabbit :~)

Glad to help. Hope it keeps your little stinker in at night. =)

I just clamped them on the cage doors and told him “You are my prisoner! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!!”

They’ll definitely keep him in, thanks. I know he wasn’t running around all night, but just broke out in the morning on the two days I slept in (as in past 9 a.m.) and was just too excited to come out of his cage to wait any longer!

I’m glad you found them and that they’ll work for you! No more cat food for the bun! lol =)

Very cute that he came to see you each time. Darn their cuteness!! : )

I wonder if he’s a distant relative to ScooterandAnnette’s Aeryn? They look similar. She is very wily, has undone a padlock on the condo more than once! They were curious to see what would happen if they left the key in it. Sure enough, she broke out. lol

It’s funny how some animals are more clever than others… my sick cat recently discovered that I was sneaking her pills into bits of fish, and now refuses to eat it even if it’s her favorite… she knows the pill is in there… what a pain! My other cat is much dumber and I guarantee would never figure that out. I guess Bun-Bun joins the ranks of “clever” family members… unfortunately, because the smart ones cause the biggest problems!

these guys, the little suitcase padlocks, thats what I use to keeps Jennys door shut at night, everything else she can break out of, but the little suitcase locks hold solid :p for Peepers I use a clamp like the one pictured which holds pretty good as well.

I use the things that are on the ends of leashes. I think they’re called snap links, or swivel bolt snaps, but so far, so good. He likes to rattle his door if he’s frustrated and wants out. My door is two panels high. I have one close to the floor, and one close to the top, where his second level is.
