Not sure where to place this thread. How do you guys cover your cables so it looks nice? Please post pictures.
These past two weeks, Molly and Karl have gone cable beserk for some reason (I keep saying it is post-stress). They’ve killed the Nintendo, the tv and lots of other cables.I for one do not really care, but my boyfriend is not happy, so I need to find a solution.
The thing is that our cable chaos is in the middle of the room (the cables to tv/stereo system/nintendo is between the red cabinet and the tv right behind it) as you can see on this picture, so it is a bit tricky to cover them up. We have something like this on the image to the right to keep the cables in under the cabinet, but the cables do have to go from the box and up to the tv, stereo et.c. leaving them exposed.
I remember having seen some kind of transparent cable protecter that apparently had a lemon taste to it, but I don’t remember where I saw it and not sure if it really works? So, what do you do so it looks nice?
wow… i love your living room!!!!! umm we just got i big cable cord and put all of our cords in the one cable cord.. its hard to explain i will go take a pic of it.
i mean a big cable cord protection thing
here are the pics!

hmmmm… i am not sure what to do with the nintendo and stuff though. could you just keep it locked away when they are out or somthing?
It looks nice, so definitely worth a go. That’s the kind of thing, I’m looking for. And they cannot chew through that thing? Is it just an ordinary cable tube-thing? They are VERY destructive and determined these days.
it is pretty thick… not sure how destructive your buns are though. they cant reach ours cuz it is to far up the wall. i could ask my dad were he bought it if you want.
Wow, Karla, your place is amazing! Scandinavia does everything better.
We are still struggling with the cord thing… I think we will try something like what Mocha suggested, because even with the proofing with the NIC grids, he still has gotten to a computer charger ($80), 2 phone chargers ($30 each), plus the vaacum chord.
Haha, oh, yes the vacuum cord – I lost that one as well. Karl had a day where he was being really cranky and everything seemed to be in his way. I was vacuuming and then I saw Karl moving around at the corner of my eye. The cord was just in front of the cage, which apparently pi**ed him off and then he chewed it. We fixed it though. May I recommend cable tape? It is the invention of the century.
Here is the cable protector with lemon, I was talking about. Just found it:

It sounds really interesting.
PS: thanks for the comments about the living room. It is my boyfriend’s place. My style is much more colorful. I should find some pictures of that. It is funny actually how our different cultures really show in our living rooms. We should do a living room thread ![]()
Oooo that is a very cool living room. Our’s is all western with horse shoes and bridles and …westerny things. Let’s trade!
I’ve just lined everything with grids…the tubes look much nicer on the eyes.
Has anyone tried that lemon tasting cable protector? I’d like to
I bought t sling tubing from radio shack. there r 2 thicknesses. the thicker ones work great n it comes with a split in it so you dont have to cut it your self to slip the wires in.
I didn’t realize at first glance that the living room in the photo is yours; I thought I was looking at a sample picture from an IKEA catalogue.
–Do your rabbits free-roam in such fancy quarters even when you are out??
cables remain an unsolved mystery for me. i covered my cords with exactly what mocha posted, but they only made MJ chew them more. the make a fun crinkly noise when he chews them and he just can’t resist. i took them off hoping he’d leave the cords alone, but then he just went right back to chewing the cords.
i’ve resorted to finding ways to try to pin the cords out of his reach against the wall behind furniture, but this would obviously not work in your situation. has anybody ever tried anything like this?

or would that just be more inviting?
Interesting. i think the best way to protect them would be by blocking off the area where the cables are, or using NIC cubes close to the appliances to thread the plug parts through and then running the remaining cables up high, along the walls or ceiling — but it looks bad.
I thought that living room photo was from a magazine too. Love the look. I think it’s pretty colorful as well with the red.
That cable box looks very ingenious too.

LOL! Well, we do love Ikea. The red cabinet is from Ikea, so is the white rug, the coffee table and the floor lamp ![]()
You know, you think it looks fancy, but when you get close, the bean bags have holes all over them, because somebunny takes a nice bite of them a couple of times a week, so I keep having to repair them, and the white rug is stained from Molly eating tomatoes on it. Besides…Ikea is cheap, so things are easily replaced. That’s the key to it all when living with animals and still wanting a nice home ![]()

I’m still hooked on the lemon-infused cable protecter. I tried contacting the company, but they have never gotten back to me. So, our cables are still exposed in the middle of the room. Still need to go out and get some of those protectors Mocha showed.
If anyone buys those lemon-infused ones, please give a review!
Looks liek I need to go to Ikea now…lol

You can get them at Ikea too.

So is it the cord running vertically up between the cabinet and tv that is at risk of chewing?
Hey, what a great tip, JG. And as you can tell, I know where my Ikea is
Only thing is that I know they can definitely chew through that one, but I guess it is just a matter of stocking up a huge number and changing them in time if they continue with the chewing. Great tip! I really didn’t know they had those. Gotta get me some this week.

Yes, only the vertical ones. Because the cable box we have covers the rest of them really well.
I think the problem has been solved now, I know I can get the protector at Ikea as well. I should really get some kind of discount for writing “ikea” so many times in this thread!!
If it’s just thin cables you need to cover, and not ones with big plugs like electrical cords have, you might be able to run them up inside a length of pvc pipe or square profile aluminium tube. You could mount this vertically to the back of the cabinet.
Paint it red and it’d look like one of the cabinet legs…….though this could look odd too!
By the way, I have now learn that cable type covers can also be called cable trunking and raceways. Never new that.
What an amazing living room… *Beka glances at her shabby living quarters… sigh…*
That is an amazing room! Besides mine looking like a construction zone because I’m slowly remodeling an old house, my interior decor consists of hardware cloth and nic cubes. The tv and x-box is in one corner with a nic fence around it. We try to make sure all wires are behind it when bunnies are roaming.
In my computer room, I’m going to run some 2 inch pipe along the wall from the electric plug, cable/modem outlet so I can run the cords through it and have it turn up beside my desk, the height of the desktop so there’s no way they can get to them. again. 😉 I might even paint the pipe the color of my molding and trim so it’s not so obvious.
Yeah, the best way to bunny-proof is by tearing your house down and starting over with small, 5 pound, furry creatures in mind.
The best way to bunny-proof is by making a giant cage for yourself with all your valuables inside.
Karla, I came across that CritterCord online which reminded me of this thread. It’s also marketed under the name Marshall Cord Protector, so you might be able to find an online seller by searching under that name.
My cord covers are actually a similar material – just vinyl hose from the hardware store. It’s rather soft and bunny teeth could chew through it however, mine don’t seem to be interested. I attribute this to the vinyl smell and maybe taste? I do make a habit of tucking cord along the wall and turning things of at the power point for extra saftey measures. Anyway, you could try make a scented version of this hose by wiping it over with lemon essential oil. Apparently this is a spider deterrent too so that could be a bonus.
I use the thick flexible plumbing tubing for the stuff they are super determined to get. At least then it takes a good six months of them chewing on it to get through…and I can cut out the bad sections and re-insert new thick tubing.
There are a couple of spots that my two LOVE. They will ignore every other cord with cover, but something really gets their bunny hackles up about the digital cable cord. *cough* I had that fight with my husband when the cable went out after Coco had dug it out of the wall!
Your living room is gorgeous! And so neat!
I just use NIC grids to block off the cord areas. However, I’m really disliking how it feels like our whole living room is fenced in. Now that Hannah is a little less crazy and destructive, I’m going to start scaling back the fencing and see if I can make it look a little nicer.
My biggest issue is a floor lamp. I need a good way to protect that cord so I don’t have to fence it off because putting a fence in front of it just looks awkward.
I forgot to mention that I bought some lime flavored cord protectors, but I’ve only used it in one spot. I should see if it’s long enough to do the floor lamp. It’s fairly thin though – definitely not good enough for a determined chewer, but from what I’ve seen, my guys just take nibbles occasionally. They’re not practiced destructors.
