› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Buster’s sick again :(
I haven’t been here in a while dude to my new job, but i wanted to ask for some healing vibes for Buster.
She got GI stasis and has been all blocked up from probably eating Spinach or green peppers. They are apparently very gaseous for her and it was something I never really gave to her, and it didnt sit well. She didnt eat her dinner the following night, then the whole next day, then didnt take a raisin friday night, i knew something was wrong. I probably should have called the vet the first night but we thought she was just ‘full’ from pellets or something b/c we gave her alot that day.
Anyway, she’s been a the vet since Friday and they say she didnt have a low temp or bloating, but as of last night she still has not pooped and have to force feed her w/syringes. I can’t take her home til at least tomorrow (monday) if all goes to plan. The vets seemed annoyed w/me that I waited and not brought her in right away. My vet is one of the only bunny vets around here and is on the ‘HRS list’ and have been very good, but I just got the feeling that when i talked to her last night (after 5 emergency surgeries) she was annoyed w/me. Maybe its b/c Buster wasnt a serious case and she had to call me. I dont know, but we are going to see her today. I’ve been crying all weekend like a baby. I feel so bad and miss her so much. The vet said that this was ‘normal’, for her not to poop after not eating and being dehydrated for a few days, so it takes some time for her to start pooping again. I’m just scared of all of this. I most likely did it to her from those vegetables ![]()
Can you just send some positive healing vibes to my little bun bun?
Thank you very much,
” />
Poor Buster. Keep us posted please.
(((Healing vibes!)))
Those little tums can be so sensitive sometimes. It’s hard to know what’s going to set them off.
Sending lots of pooping tummy vibes for Buster!
(((healing vibes too))))))
Kathy and the furballs
i was just informed she has passed mucus, not an poop yet. I’m so upset
going to see her in 2 hrs and will report back.
Get better soon little Buster!! *hugs and vibes*
Thank you…we went to visit and she looked doped up, but ok. She started eating veggies today…good sign, but still no poop and still not sure when she’ll come home b/c vet said she is VERY TOUGH when it comes to syringe feeding. They said one of the toughest they have had.
little squirmer.
get well soon buster.stop making your mommy cry.
Vibes to Buster. I would confer with the vet about the possibility of the veggies causing her stasis – is that what the vet said? Or is this what you think?
the vet said it is most likely that and the other vet said that it also could be related to the stress of trying to bond her which just happened his week too.
{{{VIBES}}} to darling Buster! (((Hugs for you Denise))) don’t blame yourself, Buster needs you to be positive. Keep us updated.
As of this morning…still no poop
they are going to x-ray her again.
They are giving her an IV of fluids right now to move this along…still not moving
I’m so upset.
Sometimes it can take awhile. Continued vibes to Buster.
she passed a HUGE poop w/hair in it…like ALL HAIR. I’m so relieved. They still have to keep the IV in her little paw til tomorrow
This may have been the culprit all long…but not sure yet.
Yay!!!! I hope that’s it!!! poor baby!!! *snuggles Buster get better*
{{{vibes}}}
Oh good! I hope her recovery is swift now.
Continued vibes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope the little darling can go home soon! (((((Get Well Buster))))
Been a couple days… any update?
Just got home w/her!! The vet called her a miracle bunny for coming out of this! She almost could have died on Monday. It was really bad blockage that if she didnt pass, would have been over.
So now, she’s loafed in her Cottontail Cottage 2nd floor. I think she just wants to be comfy at home right now. Thank you everyone!!
YAY!!!!!!!!!!! Keep us posted on her recovery!
((((((((((((((((((VIBES!))))))))))))))))))
Glad to hear she’s home!!! ![]()
It’s heartening to read these sort of updates!! I’m happy to hear you have your Sweetie home where she belongs. ![]()
She’s still doing great! Thanks everyone!
It took her until now, to really stop getting mucousy huge poops. They seem to be normal poops now! She’s back to being a NUT!
Goodness, she’s only just coming back to regular poop? Did she ever have those mucousy poops before this stasis episode?
Yes, she had a mix of the mucousy ones and regular ones since we took her home, but more mucousy than normal. She had mostly normal ones before the episode…the last night she pooped before the episode, they were big and moist though.
So thankful she’s ok, but I dont think we’re getting another bun now.
I suppose if she had some sort of upset she’d get that loose stool like you saw right before the stasis.
She had mostly normal ones before the episode.
Mostly? I suppose I’m asking for more poop detail. :p Has she ever has a fecal test done?
Yes, she had the poop last week sent to vet. They said it is probably just taking her time to come back to normal. She is a tiny, but tough bun.
It wasn’t very loose stool that was happening, it was all different shapes, huge, small, and very moist w/some mucous (after stasis)
Just as I thought she was better we had a big scare. She didn’t eat her veggies last night and i knew something was wrong again.
She ended up being in the litter box for a long time, eating hay and then doing these convulsing like moves…like it looked like she was trying to throw up( i know they cant) or push out poop. I called the vet and just before the vet called me back, she pooped out this humungous poop like twice the size of my thumbnail. Poor thing. The vet told me to stop giving her veggies and just hay and pellets for now, b/c something isn’t right still.
She’s still producing wet ones….so i hope this helps.
No more veggies! I hope she doesnt go hungry!
That sounds painful.
I’m glad the vet called you right back, and gave you instructions. Just keep paying attention as you have been and let her be without veggies for the designated duration from the vet. She won’t go hungry at all, but she may feel better about what she does eat after this.
It was so scary…seeing her like ‘dry heave’ or trying to push out. Such a big poo that came out. Biggest i’ve ever seen and she’s been doing a lot of big ones!
I really do have the best rabbit vet. They are so good and the Dr. works ALL hours/all night. She’s always around if you need her at night w/the call service and they page her.
Oh wow, poor baby Buster!! You must have felt terrible seeing her straining, I send my best wishes to you both!!! {{{{{vibes}}}}}
I am just glad for you and Buster that she is better! How scary! Poor bunny!
Well its day 4 of no veggies. She’s eating a lot of hay and seems to be drinking a lot more water than usual. Her poops are still very moist and another big one (not like the other night big), but big and a little mucous. She seems totally fine, though, running around and a few binkies before and all.
I will have to call the vet tomorrow to check-in.
Well, so sad to say she’s back at the vet overnight again. She stoppled eating& pooping a few days ago. Was only producing this mucous stuff.
Vet xrayed her& doesn’t see a blockage, but she knows she’s in pain
please send bunny healing vibes.
all I can think of as to what caused this is a piece of carpet she ate or stress of having a dog in the house the past few days. Dog didn’t even come in contact w/her, just looked over her gate.
im so upset ![]()
I have Buster in my thoughts, how scary this would all be *big hugs to you and Buster*
(((((((((Buster))))))) Come on Sweetie, hang in there and get better!!!!
Vet called and said she still hasn’t pooped yet
They syringe fed her and she seems bright and alert…but what is going on?
She had no food in her stomach at all when this started…no blockages. She said she may just be a bunny w/GI issues.
I feel so bad…i’m hysterical crying now….ugh.
Hang in there Denise, she’s with the doctor, they’ll take good care of her.
That she is bright and alert are good signs.
Bunny illness is so mysterious. I will send some healing vibes for your dear one. (((((((((((((((((((((((Buster))))))))))))))))))))))
: ( {{{{{Buster!}}}}}
Has the vet suggested a sort or maintenance regime for her to try prevent periodic episodes?
Has the vet checked her teeth? Vibes to Buster.
Thanks….
She’s still the same. On a ton of meds to get things moving. She’s going to be there another day or two.
I’m so sad….it breaks my heart. I just want to cry every second.
Not sure what caused it. The vets said some bunnies are just prone to these GI issues.
I hope Buster gets better : ( It’s sad to read these stories. I know how you feel, since Smokey had some issues with kale and her big molt that had me at the doctor. Is Buster shedding a lot right now?
She was shedding a lot…but the vet said this wasn’t a blockage. She had NOTHING in her tummy. Day 4 and still hasn’t pooped, but her cecum is getting filled up they said. I want my baby home, but I know I cant syringe feed her and medicate her like they can over there.
I’m afriad we are DONE w/veggies forever and she just cant handle them.
{{{BUSTER}}}
How is she?
They did an enema on the poor bunny last night. THe vet called me at like 1 in the morning..telling me she hasn’t gone yet…then concerned she may have cow poop syndrome. They did an enema and that helped! She went!! Hoping and praying she comes home tomorrow.
Still not sure about how to fix this and prevent it…doc doesnt think it was veggies that are causing this, but i dont want to give her anyomore.
Do you still have her on pellets? Those very well could be the problems moreso than veggies.
yes! She she was still on pellets. Really? They could be the problem? When i didnt give her veggies and she was just on pellets…she seemed to be fine…drier poop and drank more water, but ok.
i got her really good pellets too..the exact rainbow (i call them lucky charms) ![]()
lucky charms? do they have stuff in them besides pellets?
I think they are discontinuing the rainbow pellets.
Most rabbit knowledgeable vets will take rabbits totally off pellets who have chronic stasis problems. I would talk to the vet about her diet – you mentioned that the vet doesn’t believe it’s the veggies – does the vet see alot of rabbits?
no, the rainbow pellets only have pellets in there but i think there is sort of a treat in there. the vet recommended that.
The rainbow pellets don’t have treats in them – they are just extruded differently from regular pellets which is why they have those shapes. Anyway, they are discontinuing these pellets.
Since Buster has had several stasis incidents, I would discuss with the vet about her diet to see if she recommends changing it at this point.
Yes, thanks Sarita. My vet is strictly for bunnies, cats and hamsters. Catnip & Carrots.
She sees tons! Very dedicated vet…she’s there til like 1am every night!
She sounds terrific. Do discuss her diet again with the vet when you get Buster back. It may be time to reconsider her diet to see if changing it will help with the problem.
Love that name for a clinic too!
i just bought another bag of pellets–glad i have the receipt and didnt open it yet!
i’m so worried this will happen again doing all of this testing.
You said the vet mentioned “cow poop” syndrome….here is a response from Dana Krempels to our own Katnip about her rabbit with this:
en.allexperts.com/q/Rabbits-703/200…os-Cow.htm
Why don’t you read this, print it out and discuss it with your vet – she obviously is very familiar with this to mention about it.
She’s home!! Vet is leaning towards her being a cow poop bunny
But she’s not completely sure yet. Something about her spine not feeling just right–like a cow poop bunny. ALso said no one has done hardly any research on this condition and there are no really known causes/remedies…causes are i guess hereditary or buns who are white w/spots.
If her poop changes in shapes then i’ll have to see and giver her the meds again (Reglan?) And for now i’m only giving her pellets and hay……even though vet said veggies were fine…but thats when she had issues…w/veggies!
Good to hear she’s home!
If she is a cow poop syndrome bunny, don’t despair. There is some action you can take (giving lactulose and mineral oil(?)) and it seems you’re going to be modifying things for her as it is. Cwp bunnies can go along really well on these preventative measures. I believe KatnipCrzy’s Schroeder has not had any stasis episodes since being on the lactulose. Hopefully she’ll look in on this thread and confirm that.
Thank you for your continued thoughtfulness and support ![]()
I’m going to move this topic to the “House Rabbit Q&A” subforum. The “Support” section is to memorialize bunnies who have passed over the bridge. More people will be able to see this post in the other section.
Continued vibes to Buster!
Thanks Beka….sorry I thoguht the Support forum was also for sick buns….but i’m happy to be HERE!!
Sooo Buster came home Saturday. Her poos are still very moist and HUGE. Last night she was straining/pushing/convulsing/licking her behind to push out poo for 2 hours.
I called the vet and she told me she will pass the poo (most likely a big piece) and to give her metacam. I did and I woke up at 1am to check on her and she went….3 HUGE pieces. Poor thing. I’m so at a loss as to what to feed her. Veggies, no veggies, etc. I have her just on pellets and hay now…but she’s still struggling.
I called the vet and told her..wating for a call back.
As I said, she’s leaning towards her being a cow poop bun, but not sure yet. I think I should keep her off of veggies for now, but really not sure.
Thank you,
so glad that everything came out ok… literally!!!! wow, that must have been scary.
