        Hey,

So we have a triangular litter box in the cage for Buster and while she does go in it mostly for everything, she does tend to pee outside of its corners once or twice a day. It leaves marks and is smelly on the cardboard and then drips down to the plastic.

Any suggestions? I know she is mostly a great bunny but this just frustrates us b/c we are always cleaning up and changing the cardboard we have lined on the bottom. Is it dangerous for her to smell that overnight or all day when she’s in the cage?

        Thanks

I would suggest getting a bigger square or rectangular litterbox because it sounds like the one you have is a bit small 🙂 A box with higher sides will also prevent her from sticking her bum out over the edge of the pan.

Thanks! Any suggestions on a good litterbox? I dont want to take away too much space from her cage. I saw on RabbitMart they have one for large bunnies.

Hmm … many people just buy regular cat litter boxes from the pet store. I have one meant for small animals and it’s 13″x13″. It’s a good size for my small (4lb) bun, but any bigger than him and I would need a bigger box (plus it does have one low side that is possible to pee over – luckily I haven’t had issues with that because Otto only pees in the back of the box). How big is Buster? And how big is the one on RabbitMart?

Target sells the cat litter boxes with the high tops – it’s 2 pieces and you latch the top to the bottom.

Buster is only 2lbs. She’s 5 months now. Our cage is the standard cage that comes in the “rabbit kit’ they sell at pet stores. The one on Rabbit Mart was 15.75″x11x8” this one: http://www.rabbitmart.com/shop/index.php?page=shop-flypage-23711
Or I can get a rectangular one that might make more sense like this: http://www.rabbitmart.com/shop/index.php?page=shop-flypage-577

                    Yeah, that’s way too small.

Is she free roam during the day and just uses the cage at nigh?

What is way too small, Sarita?
She is not free during the day She is in the cage all day and all night and is out when we get home from work until we go to bed in our kitchen. 5 hours a day during the week she is out of the cage in the kitchen, and then all weekend days if we are home. She sleeps in her cage at night always.

I would say both of those litter pans are too small. I think you’re better off just going to a pet store and buying a small cat box or the largest small pet one they offer. I would recommend at least 13″x13″x8″. The triangular ones are really never a good idea because it’s too hard for the bun to fit their butt in it. The rectangular one is better, but the sides are too low and she would still be able to pee over the sides.

Hmmm. We don’t have any pet stores except a smallish one by where we live/work. It’s crazy. I have to do most ordering of supplies online.
Which rectangular ones fit in a cage and aren’t too low?

A cat box should be able to fit in the cage… the smallest size cage you want to use is about 2×4 feet, so as long as it’s that size, a small cat box should suffice.

Well, we got her a rectangle pan that is larger and takes up 1/3 of the cage, but she hasn’t missed! She’s a good girl. Now we have to get her a larger cage soon!

                                  Yay Buster!!!

Regarding a cage, your best best will be to either build a NIC condo that you can customize to fit your space, or get an xpen that can be easily set-up. When the time comes, let us know if you need suggestions.
