Burrowing litter box

my bunny has always kept a neat and tidy litter box, I clean it every other day. she is 16 months old now and has been litter box trained since I got her at 8 weeks old. the past week as soon as I put her clean litter box box in it’s spot she takes her front feet and pushes everything from one corner of the box to the other corner and half of it ends up on the floor. there have been no changes, I have always put a layer of soft white recycled absorbent paper and then a layer of timothy hay, (she likes to eat hay while pooping) why is she doing this now?

That has to be frustrating! That is one of the reason why I have yet to make the leap to a litter box without a grate. It sounds to me like she has either found something fun to do or she has discovered exactly how she wants her box arranged.

thanks for the reply. you may be right, I think it’s wanting it arranged her way as she does this with everything she has. she put’s her food bowl in the same spot if I move it, her water bowl cannot be next to her food or she moves it if I put it there, she has boxes to hide in and eat hay in a few rooms in the house and she moves everyone of them after I put them back where I wanted them. she has even come up behind me when I move her things and bites my pants leg and pulls on them. she is a sassy little girl. I just cleaned her box again and did not fill it to the top edge and she kept it this way when she went in it, I think when it was filled to the top she didn’t want to be so high up, almost like she didn’t want me to see her pooping, she’s a small bunny so now she sit’s almost out of view in the box, her litter box is almost hidden from view though under a bench style table that curves around. she loves it under there, I have even placed soft carpet squares for her to lay on during the day. (she does not eat carpet) she sleeps in my room when I go to bed at night.
