I’ll be calling the vet this evening anyway…but wanted to know.

I have some buprenorphine on hand.  Leo’s teeth look like they are starting to give him problems again, so I wanted to administer pain meds until I can get him into the vet to have them trimmed.  So I wanted to know if anyone knows what the dosage for liquid buprenorphine for a 4-5 lb rabbit?  I have some left over from his last mouth filing/trimming, but I don’t have the bag w/ the dosages on it.  I hope that made sense and I didn’t sound like a nut.  Suggestions would be helpful in the meantime…but I will be speaking w/ the vet anyway.

I assume you are giving orally or under the tongue (Sub-lingual)?  Did they give you prefilled syringes?  How they dispensed it might tell you how much to give.  Buprenorphine is an injectable drug that can be given PO (orally) or typically SL.  I don’t have a dose for this per se, as given other than injectable or rectal  appears to be an off label use (although we use it all the time for post-surgery cats).   The range listed for injectable has a huge range- the low end of the dose is 10x the high end of the dose.   I don’t have an answer for this here at home.  Sorry

I am curious to how it is dispensed to you- as it comes in a vial- and we typically if we send it home draw it up into pre-measured syringes.  Is it mixed with any flavoring?

This may help: http://www.iacuc.ucsf.edu/Proc/awDosages.asp something to consider would be calling your vet and asking about dosage as well until you can get the little fella in.

Turns out the buprenorphine was for my cat.  It was an oral in the predosed syringes, for dental pain.  Turns out my vet prefers metacam for bunnies.  He said that I could use the bu, but that’s not their preference for rabbits.  Needless to say, I ended up having to go in to pick up the script.  I was trying to avoid going out to the vet b/c it’s about a 20-30 minute drive each way.  Why can’t the bunny vet be right down the street?

                Thanks everyone foro the help.

glad you were able to check in with the vet. It does seem like metacam is the most commonly offered pain med, so glad you were able to get some for Leo. I hope they’re able to get his teeth all fixed up at his upcoming appointment. poor guy.
