So here’s a pic of the new setup:

The buns got a new, hi-top litter pan because I am tired of every morning waking up to litter dug out of the box and onto the floor.  I also added the 100% Jute rug to the floor because, well I was tired of the staining I had to clean up when the litter was dug out.  However, when I removed all of the stuff from the cage, I noticed that there were three holes chewed in the rug below – two about the size of a quarter an another about 4″ in diameter.  I was a little bit scared because that’s a lot of carpet fibers for them to be ingesting – until I cleaned out the cardboard box/home on the right side – there was a HUGE pile of them inside.  So I replaced it with a towel.

Whelp, I won’t be getting my security deposit back on this apartment.

Let’s see the whole total for the habitat is:

        $50 – NIC Cubes

        $10 – Zip Ties

        $40 – Hay rack

        $10 – litter pan

        $40 – Rug

That’s $150!  I probably could have found a professionally made one for cheaper.  But it IS a labor of love…

As in I’d love to labor about throttling Maryann for chewing up the carpet.

fancy digs markus!  (pun intended)  i thought the same thing when i thought about how much i have spent on nic cages.  altho i keep changing my mind about how i want it layed out which i would miss out on if i bought a professionally made indoor hutch.  that hay rack does look really sweet!  once i find out if / how the girls will bond and get their accomodations adjusted accordingly, i’ll look into getting one of those.  it would be great for my hay monster!

very nice!  can you post another pic of the rack… it’s a bit hard to see there.  it does cost money and take time to make the NIC condos, but like BBM said, it’s so much more versatile.  and i have to say, after all the  heartache you went thru with those two, it’s awesome seeing them residing in the same space!

they can, and that’s something you need to watch for.  my rabbit chewed off one at first.  i picked it up, replaced it with a new one, and she’s never chewed on them again.  like with anything… if you’re providing enough chewing distraction you hopefully should not have a problem!

LOL great setup Markus!!! They look happy in there!

You should check out the bunnyproofing section, it has a spot on how to fix chew marks in carpet, (ie. taking a small section out of a closet or something and glueing it in where the chew is)

Also, you never know, if they don’t replace the carpet maybe you’ll get your depost back…Kokanee did one square foot down to the boards in my old apratment and they freaked out, but they didn’t replace it, so I got my full deposit back!!!

I have found that if you put the zip ties so that the ‘nub’ part of it is on the outside, they don’t have anything to chew on. I haven’t had an issue with any yet.

I am planning on finding a carpet remenant that is of similiar design and replace it. Truthfully though, the carpets needed to be replaced when I moved in so hopefully they won’t ding me too much.

As for the hay rack, they’re great. You can really overstuff them and just let your buns have the fun of chewing out a hole to get to it. The mess is non-existant unless you happen to have a bun who thinks it’s a game to pull it all out of the box.

Here’s a link to the save a bunny shop where they sell them.

Those hay racks are the best.  Edson gets his whole head in there digging for the best pieces. It’s pretty cute.

Okay, I love those hayracks too – how do they attach to the cage or how did you attach yours? Or do you need to? I cannot tell – it looks like it sits flush next to the litter box which is perfect.

They have a flat back and bottom and slanted front with a door. They do not need to be attached as they are heavy and extremely well made. They never move or flip over. Just open the door and stuff the hay in! They come in singles, doubles and triples. I have a double and it works great.
