        Hi all,

My bunny hasnt been breathing too well lately. She hasn’t been eating or drinking much. She hasn’t peed or pooped as much and her poop pellets are smaller in size. I took her to the vet and she took this xray. She was getting lasix and abx but doesn’t seem to be getting better so far after 5 or so hours. Her xray also looks really patchy. The vet said it might be pneumonia/tumor/abscess but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the xray that I am attaching. Appreciate any tips

I really couldnt say from the x rays but I dont think your rabbit should have been sent home. Is she on any pain meds at all?

Is that the stomach behind the ribs? If so it seems very large. Could the dark patches in it be gas?

I’m obviously not an expert either, but it certainly doesn’t look right. I would suggest getting a copy of the x-rays sent to a rabbit/exotics specialist who many be able to give you more insight.

I agree, I think the dark spots are gas also. I think the stomach and liver are hard to determine as they sit beside each other. Im assuming stomach is upper part, where you can see the dark patches, liver is lower part. Little concerned about what I can see of rest of intestine if that is also got a lot of dark patches. Hopefully not empty or gas pockets.
Curious to know why the xray is labeled Pygmy Rabbit also!

              How is her breathing now?

Admittedly I had a laugh at pygmy rabbit on the xray I assume it’s just what they put in the computer for a dwarf rabbit.

JG, I think you’re right about the stomach and liver, originally it looked like one big organ, but there is some differentiation between the two parts. I had the same thought about the dark intestines though.

The lungs do look very hazy. The area marked out here should look just dark.

                  Like in these other radiographs.

Image from http://www.melbournerabbitclinic.com/wordpress/?page_id=1445, Note: this is a rabbit with caecum disorder but Im posting it in reference to the lung area only.

I wouldn’t know how to tell the difference between pneumonia v’s abscessation v’s tumour.

Has your rabbit had other respiratory issues in the past?

What age is she?  Is she desexed or intact?

She hasn’t had any respiratory issues in the past. She is about to be 6 in Feb. She is intact. Appreciate the help so far guys. She looks like she’s still having some trouble breathing. She isn’t eating or drinking much. Ive been trying to syringe feed her. I also started an antifungal today.

Okay, given her age and that she’s intact you’ll have to consider the possibility of this being uterine cancer that has metastasised to the lungs. That is one of the most common organs where it would spread to.
I think this would need to be ruled out. I don’t know how the vets go about this, whether is just a matter of further Xrays or ultrasound of her lower organs or perhaps some bloodwork.

I hope this isn’t the case and your just looking at bacterial infection in which the medications haven’t taken effect yet.

yea I think that’s what the vet was worried about too. she wasn’t too optimistic about her chances. seemed like she didnt want to stress the bunny out anymore but hopefully the meds will start showing some improvement

Hey guys, I just wanted to give you all a final update. Unfortunately, she passed away yesterday. She got to the point where she couldn’t even lift her head up and passed away shortly after. I was glad my gf and I were there to be with her until her last breath. It is comforting to know she isn’t suffering anymore and I appreciated all the prayers.

Im very sorry. It would have been hard to see her struggling. You are so right, she no longer suffers.
