Coal will be 6 years old in Jan, and for the past 6 years his cage has always been in my room. (he only goes in there to poop and sleep). Recently for the last two weeks it seems as if at night he tries to get my attention or will try to wake me up on purpose because he wants out. He’ll do anything he can from digging to ripping paper, to chewing on the bars, hopping around the cage etc etc, and he knows it wakes me up. I honestly for the life of me can not get him to stop and most nights i have to relocate his cage so he does. I really do love him staying with me in my room, but i don’t know why he’s doing what he’s doing and how to get him to stop it.. He also was brought to the vet three days ago for a check up and he’s a completely healthy bunny so he’s not frustrated or in pain or anything.

Im truly getting the impression that he just wants out and wants attention but I need my sleep too, and the house isn’t safe for him to be out of the cage and unsupervised.

Anyone have any suggestions i’m at a loss and need my sleep!

My impression is this is pretty common! I haven’t let my bunnies come into my room at night because from time to time they would make noise too, and to me sleep is sacred! (; In my case I just bunny-proofed the rest of the apartment, but I hear you that you can’t do that. Could you bunny-proof your room and keep the door closed at night, so he could roam free in there? He would at least not be trying to get out of his cage then! Or if not that, how about a pen setup instead of a cage, so he has more room to play?

It’s his playtime, and he desperately wants to play with you! We bun slaves either have to live on their schedule or keep them outside our sleep areas at night. When I first let Clover free roam, she was determined to get in bed with me, but she was a TERRIBLE bed mate. She hogged the bed, nipped to get me to lay like she wanted, etc. But, after a while, she settled in to being a lovely bedmate, and conformed to my sleep schedule. During Hurricane Irma, she tucked herself under my arm and snoozed the storm away.

Has there been any changes made to your room recently? Moving of furniture, a new scent etc.

              Also, is he neutered?

Hello everyone! I apologize for the extremely late reply. Me and coal have been busy! Yes, coal is neutered and he gets plenty of out of cage time. I’ve concluded hes a bit of a little attention seeker now a days. He still tries to wake me up some night but a simple “No” will keep him quiet now. Thanks for you help! <3

Any reaction he can get out of you (even a “no”) is a success for him. If you ignore, chances are he’ll settle down eventually
