I have a 1 year old female lop who is fixed and everything.

she acts very healthy, doesnt show any sign of lethargy or pain, she eats regulary and gets excited for food. In the morning she even runs around energetically. However, every once in a while i notice her left eye will look like shes been crying. and ive done my research but i dont know what to make of it. There has never been any white discharge, redness, its never a ton of ‘tears’, and she has never shown any sign of pain. Could this just be a genetic thing in her? it has been going on her whole life but im starting to worry about it. it seems to only be water and its only a little. I know i should take her to the vet just in case but im worried about how expensive it will be, because to test for infection don’t they have to take a blood test? Could u please tell me if you’ve had similar experiences or maybe what i should expect them to do at the vet to find out whats wrong?

Also worth noting, the breeder i got her from knew about the watery eye thing and they didnt seem worried about it, i remember they said it was genetic or something, and that i i should just keep putting a little apple cider vinegar in her water to prevent it or keep it under control.

        Thank you

My Bunz (holland lop) does this as well in her right eye.

No other issues. I’ve just been told to keep it clean with water and remove the build up gently and go to vet if it looks worse.

I suppose it’s possible something could be wrong with her tear duct and she was born that way. It could be irritation from hay, etc. It could be a number of things. Without any other symptoms, it’s hard to say.

Yeah, thats what I think, maybe she was born with a tear duct that doesnt correctly or something. She as an appointment at the vet soon, I thought it would be better to know, exactly what is going on, so I can watch it or know how to maintain it.

              thanks for the help

Ah yes, just keep an eye on her maybe. My bun usually has a bit of eye crust, but he tooth-purrs when I clean it out haha, and I’ve never noticed anything else wrong with him. Hopefully you don’t worry too much <3

I took her to the vet yesterday and he checked her teeth and gave her a generalized check up and everything seemed to be fine, so he’s assuming its allergies. he gave me a week long allergy medication ( Chlorpheniramine 4mg, if anyone has used that on their buns please let me know ) but also he said i should put artificial tears in her eyes and that i could use any human over the counter artificial tear solution. which im worried about because ive heard to absolutely never use visine in a bunnies eyes and visine is “any human over the counter artificial tear solution” so i could have easily bought that and put it in her eyes from what he told me. If anyone knows a brand or ingredients that are safe artificial tears for bunnies please let me know :/

the one i have now is just the Walgreens brand and it has dextran and hypromellose as it’s active ingredients…

also probably dumb question, is saline solution different from artificial tears? ive heard people use that on bunny eyes but i dont know if its for different reasons, the vet wanted me to get drops for lubrication mostly.

                  Thanks

                    Yes, saline solution is different.

I use Genteal drops for Wooly’s eye (the one on the paralyzed side of his face).

The Allergy medication the vet gave me over the week didnt change much; her eye isn’t swollen and red or anything and theres not much discharge but the lining when u pull her eyelid back is a little red. The upcoming week im going to try to keep the bunny’s room very clean to prevent hay dust and im also going to try saline solution in her eyes. Do you have any recommendations on a safe brand for bunnies? or maybe a salt to water ratio that would be good for drops in her eyes?
