Bunny Tricks

After reading about bunny tricks on here, and watching Youtube videos – I’ve started clicker training my boys.  I call it Tricks for Treat time.  They get so excited – and even my bashful bun Boo binkies when it’s time.  

Any suggestions on how best to teach your bun tricks, is much apprciated.  They’ve both mastered up, and pretty good with walk – and Baxter is now on to spin…but this one is going to take some time to master.  I was very impressed that IsabellaRobyn on BB taught her bun to give it’s paw….what other tricks have you taught your buns. Videos of your bunny tricks would be so awesome!!

What would you suggest for treats? Yesterday I purchased Oxbow Simple Rewards Strawberry and Veggy treats.  Baxter goes nuts for the strawberry – but Boo is not interested in either. And he’s not motivated to continue, if he doesn’t like the treat.  So for Boo, I started cutting his favorite Timothy Hay n Apple biscuit into little pieces – which works.

It’s such a fun way to spend time with my boys…..LOVE IT.

 I also would like to know how you start out, I’ve never done clicker training (I know first you have to get the bunny to associate click=treat) but we’ve been trying to do some things without the clicker. We are working on walking at the moment. I hold the treat up just out of his reach and then move it away a little bit. Caleb can walk a little bit and then he has to go down onto the floor again (i always give him a treat *kaytee timothy with carrot biscut* after he walks a little bit) trying to get him to go further and further.

Kcomstoc: That’s what I’ve been doing with my boys as well. I just bought the clicker yesterday…and will see how this goes.

I would love to know how to teach them the paw trick. They know spin, up, walk, and to hop on a box but I want the give paw! Lol

OMG baxter that is an awesome video now I feel lazy with my bunny lol I’ll have to get him a clicker (I’ll need one anyway with the puppy I’ll be getting in october) so killing 2 birds with one stone so to speak

that’s so cool when we move and Caleb will be allowed out of his cage more often then I am totally going to train him (which sadly can’t be until August ) my boyfriend’s aunt is watching his brother while he’s out of school for another week or so (he goes to a special ed school *he has autism* so his summer is shorter) anyway so Caleb isn’t allowed downstairs the nights before she comes. Caleb won’t be allowed out tonight because she comes tomorrow. He’s on my bed right now (we have stopped him from peeing on the bed by bringing his blanket from his cage and laying it down where he normally likes to pee) so he can get some action from somewhere that isn’t his cage but I feel bad because he can’t get any REAL exercise

Mine know spin, stand, and we’ve worked on jumping over things. I’ve also used the clicker for handling things like brushing.

I just use pellets as treats. The best treats are tiny and can be eaten quickly, and I can give a lot of pellets without ruining their diet. I save the sweet stuff like craisins for a treat at the end of the session.

Thanks Elrohwen! I wish my buns liked their pellets that much. Boo won’t even do tricks for craisins! He just walks away, uninterested. LOL!

Clicker for brushing sounds like a great idea! Baxter will tolerate brushing – but Boo, not so much. I’ve been using my hands to groom them the best I can – but I should try the clicker. Thanks for the idea!

Our bunny does 2 tricks: Jump through a hoop, and jump on top of an object. To learn the hoop we used a hoop that has pellets inside, to it makes a rattling noise to let know when to jump. We took a teeny bit of carrot and let him sniff, then pulled it slowly through the hoop and he would follow it. Takes a little time, but it is very impressive. Our bun, Loki, is a superb jumper so we took this to our advantage. Is there anything Boo is good at that you could turn into a trick?
