Actually, I should call this thread bunny BOX tipping…..

I see a lot of us have bunnies who regularly tip or throw their litter box. Is this a normal behavior for bunnies? If not, why would a bunny start doing this?

Mimzy began after his surgery, regularly tipping his box when he felt it was not clean enough. (After his neuter, to keep the surgical area clean I put limited litter in the bottom and changed it the minute he peed or pooped. I think he may have gotten used to it being pristine and doesn’t want to go back to a soiled box in any way, shape or form.)

My daughter’s bun, Pip, tends to throw/tip her litterbox when she wants attention (we think) or she’s hungry (which she is ALL THE TIME) and this has been keeping my daughter up at night.

Any thoughts as to how to change either of these bunnies’ habits? Or are we stuck?

You could consider a covered cat litterbox – thats what I use with my bunnies, and though they can nudge it around, they haven’t successfully tipped it! My favorites are the “Booda Domes” especially the big ones with the ramp on it, which really reduces the amount of hay that makes it OUT of the igloo and onto the floor

i would try a bigger box that they cannot tip if it’s out of the cage.

if it is the box inside the cage, you might try drilling a small hole near the top of the box and looping a ziptie thru it and thru the cage (or NIC cube) bars.  we did that with my first rabbit and he wasn’t able to tip or push the box out of position anymore.  you do need to snip the ziptie each time you clean the box, but they’re cheap.

My bunny Scamper use to move his litter box to the middle of the cage then would not use it, but go to the washroom where the box use to be before he moved it.

So what we did is drilled two holes in the litter box, but looped those zip ties threw the holes that Beka27 was talking about. But insted of looping them around the cage. We loop the tie throw a clip, like the ones at the end of a dog leash. It works well, We just clip and unclip the litter box from the side of  the cage. Scamper was not happy with us for a couple of days becuase he could not move his litter box but he use’s it all the time now.

One of Warren’s favorite passtimes used to be tipping his litter box. He’d wait until 2am, and then nose and tug it out of it’s spot.  Then I found a corner box that clipped onto the side of the cage.  That worked well, until he figured out how to unclip it. (I swear he has opposable thumbs, sometimes!) I finally found a litterbox that screws onto the side of the cage. He has tried once to move it, but he’s not *that* strong.

Well fortunately, Mimzy still uses his litterbox, no matter where he puts it…and that is what can be distressing about when he tosses it, as it is usually full of….stuff! >_<
But these are all FABULOUS ideas! Thanks so much! I would’ve gone ahead and used the zip ties and thought, Geez, this is going to get difficult with how many times I actually have to clean up after him…but the dog clips! 0.0 That’s a great way to make it easier! ^^

Clip on litterboxes? Wow, I’ve not seen the like! I have the little hook on, three corner one, but he just tips it off the bars with his nose, little scamp!

I’m off to try these ideas out! Thanks everyone!

we use binder clips to attach the box to the side of the cage, which work well too. I think they’re the medium size.

With a slice of banana if they’ve done a good job.
