I have a blue lion head 12 week old bunny and we recently (maybe two weeks ago) upgraded the cage to a hutch. We keep them ( also have a 9 week old mini Rex-chinchilla) inside. We have been letting them have a lot of time outside of their hutch to run around our basement (bunny safe). Today when I put them to bed in their hutch I heard a loud bang noise. I looked around in just enough time to see Whiskers (the lion head) running as fast as she could head first into the door of the hutch. Is this a temper tantrum? Should we reduce the amount of free time they have? Riley is fine but Whiskers is our wild child! I don’t want her to hurt herself. Will she stop this behavior once she figures out it hurts or could she seriously hurt herself?

I can’t speculate on what prompted this behavour, since so far, it was one isolated incident. But I do suggest that you keep a close eye on your little lion over the next few days in case the blow to the head injured her. Look for any loss of balance, especially. Sorry to sound alarmist, but I have a friend whose bun accidentally ran into a curtained wall during zoomies, and concussed himself.

I do also want to mention you should keep them completely separate until they are both spayed/neutered. They are both about to become hormonal and at that point all they will want to do is fight and mate. Even if they seem like best buds now it can change in the blink of an eye. Bunnies can fight to the death which is why it’s extremely important to keep them separate until they’ve been fixed and gone through the proper bonding process.

              Hope your bun feels better

Bunnies can have so-called “temper tantrums”, but I’ve never heard of them ramming a door at full speed. Rattling the door with their teeth and demanding to be let out would be more like it.

I agree, I would make sure she wasn’t having some kind of balance issue or a seizure.

So far she seems to be fine and she hasn’t repeated this behavior. Hopefully it was a one time thing. It definitely scared me.
