If it’s red and swollen it’s probably infected. Infections need antibiotics from a vet.

The only thing that may help a little (and may not) is to soak the toe/foot in a lukewarm container of salt water. Salt water can sometimes help to draw out infection, but I still highly recommend a vet visit.

I agree, it sounds infected. Cleaning it with saline would be a good idea. You can put plain Neosporin on it (no pain reliever). I don’t know where you are, but that would probably get you through the holiday. Unfortunately, if it’s to the point where the toe is swelling like that, they are going to need a systemic treatment (i.e. oral antibiotics). They are relatively cheap, the bigger cost would be the vet office visit fee.

Infections can spread pretty quickly in a bun’s body, especially since you are still seeing the infection a week later. Youre best to go to the vets asap

Vetericyn is an antiseptic. Do you have a triple antibiotic ointment like plain Neosporin? I agree he should see a vet as soon as you are able.

Thats crazy the neuters costed so much. Did you mistype? Ive never heard of a canadian or american paying more than 100$ to 350$ per spay/neuter. If youre really paying in the thousands for vet service, you absolutely need to look for a new vet. Cheaper ones do exist and Im sure are more common than one might think.

Here are the names it’s sold under. I’m not sure what they have in Canada.

Bacitracin, Neo-poly-bac, Neo-polycin, Polycin, Neocidin, Neosporin, Select, and Repara

The ointment contains Bacitracin, Neomycin and Polymyxin B. Hopefully that helps.

Thats not a normal price range no matter where you live. You should look and see if you can find a better and less expensive vet around.

I think some is sold as triple antibiotic cream. Fucidin is another antibiotic cream that’s bunny safe, I’m not totally sure but I think Fucidine is available OTC in Canada.

There will be some licking and, consequently ingestion, with those antibiotic ointments. That’s why it’s important to get one that is safe.
