In the pet stores I’ve had seen Bunny shampoo and also dry shampoo. I thought dry shampoo would be the better option. But can you actually give your bunny a bath????

You will not need to give your bunny a bath except for in very rare circumstances. Your bunny will groom itself and keep itself very clean all by itself, you will even find that your bunny smells pretty good all on their own.

The rare circumstances where a bunny might need a bath is if they get ill and pee on themselves, or get “poopy butt” where they get mushy poops and it sticks to them. In those cases, you would just bathe the small portion of the rabbit that was dirty with lukewarm water, and then try to figure out the reason for the illness. If you feed a good diet, and your bunny is healthy, I don’t think you’ll have any need for a shampoo. I have had 8 rabbits for 4 years now and we haven’t had one bath yet!

I agree with MooBunnay. Baths should not be necessary. The one time I had to give a partial bunny bath was the day I adopted my lop. He had been running around in an outdoor pen and his feet were very dirty, so I gave him a foot bath with just a little bit of water. Most of the items in petstores that are marketed for rabbits are not necessary, some are even dangerous and should be avoided.

You are in Australia? We have some good members here that live in Aus. Also, there is the Boing email newsletter that comes out monthly, which is from Aus. This is their site… they have a lot of info… http://www.boingonline.com/

Also, if you do give a butt wash, be sure to dry thoroughly. Even with a hairdryer on a NON heat setting so as not to burn sensitive skin.
Most times the rabbit does a great job themselves. If you want to clean areas for some reason, the dry bath option would be better than the water bathing. Beka mentioned boingonline – it’s one of the better sites on rabbit care in Australia – and funny too!

*nods head* You *can* give a bunny a bath…you also *can* give a cat a bath-but neither are a good idea! Like the others say, only if they are ill would they require a bath-and at that point you’d want to see a vet first
