I want to make some bunny safe toys, and paint them with bunny safe paint… I’ve used the non toxic delta soy paint and it’s worked great but it’s become very tricky to come across online and in stores, I can never find it and definitely don’t want to spend $6 a bottle for such a tiny bottle. Are there any safe alternatives other than food dye? Food dye would bleed and I couldn’t really do designs with it.

I don’t know if there is a safe paint as far as use for chewable toys, but I know that “safe” (safer than normal) paint for use around pets is paint with zero VOCs. However, even zero VOC paint is not completely free of VOCs. Such paint products may be designated as zero VOC if it contains 5g/L or less of VOC (U.S. EPA standard). Here is a link to some zero VOC paint and information on organic paints and the dangers/health concerns of VOCs: https://www.ecospaints.net/no-voc-paints.html.

I ordered a sample of this when I was constructing Luna’s new hutch (I abandoned the project because she’s going to have her own room now!) and as far as chemical smell goes, it did dissipate quickly as described (less than 24 hours), though obviously there is no way to test the true chemical safety of any paint other than to look at the MSDS (material safety data sheet).

I wouldn’t use any pain, regardless if it’s non-toxic, on something a bunny is going to chew.
