ok so due to water damage our basement is getting redone, the basment is an “animal area” is Jennys space(and eventually Peepers as well), Gerbil area and the Birds area too. so basicly we get to re-design the basment  to be suited to the animals rather then taking what was there and trying to proof it. so what I am looking for it sort of “if you could design your house to be bunny proof. what would you do?”  the basic stuff is all covered, but the design stuff I need to pay for myself, so even though they cant start work for a while(there was MAJOR flooding over the summer, we have to stand in  line behind everyone else with water damage lol) I would like to start collecting stuff now, so the cost it spread out.

no, dogs are not allowed in the basement without supervision, so just bunny proof in general..something that covers all the bases, not just for Jenny and Peepers but for any future rabbits as well.

OK… I will think about it a little rather than just shooting ideas off at you.
I hear many people had their basements flooded in SK.

yup, it was REALLY bad in maple creek, most of the people still are not back in their houses yet, the flooding in many cases filled their entire basements and into the main floor! nothing like that here, but bad enough that the city applied for disaster assistance. we have to wait till about Dec-Jan before they can get to us though lol

I’ve been thinking about this too for my basement.

I was thinking for all of the corners I’d get those stainless steel corner trim thingys.  Right now the walls kind of have a wainscotting (however you spell that).  I was thinking that for the bottom portion of the wall we could put  stainless steel panels which extend right down to the carpet, and leave off all of the baseboards.  By the time we are ready to do this, the baseboards should be all chewed off anyways!

My basement is not finished so I had to bunny-proof the raw walls, keep the rabbits from being able to dig out the insulation by tacking sheets of cardboard or coroplast to the walls. It came out looking quite nice, because I used new large cardboard pieces. I want to build an exercise area for them too and will likely go with NIC cubes to keep my rabbits away from appliances cords in my laundry area. My concern in the basement is not looks since mine is unfinished. I also have mouse traps inside NIC cubes in my basement, and I fitted grids in the windows to keep the weasels out.

ya, my basement is finished and has some rooms down there(mine included). I am not overly concerned with looks, more with practical, we breed gerbils and that where most of the cages are

here is a pic to show you what it was before

cages packed in there, we want to set up a better shelving system to fit the cages better, the carpet is coming out and being replaced with a vinyl flooring we have in other parts of the house, to make cleaning easier. we are thinking maybe lucite lining the wall about halfway up, so that bunnys cant chew drywall, or hop on the shelves and reach from there, does that sound like a good idea? previously it was like solid shelves to block the wall, but that was less then ideal for gerbil cages as it limited the numbers and cage sizes we could use, I really hate the cages stacked on top of cages as in the picture.

The topic of breeding is prohibited in this forum. ~

The lucite being transparent as well as chewproof is a good idea, but I imagine it costs quite a bit. I would check if it affects breathability of your walls though because basement walls are prone to mould.
