bunny poops but won't pee in box!

  hey everybody,
  
  relatively new bunny owner here. we found a very tame and domesticated bunny at our work and decided to keep it as a pet. we soon found out it wasn’t litter box trained. so we began putting boxes in places he liked to pee. that has worked well and he (or she, not sure which) is completely litter box trained OUTSIDE of his cage.
  
  however my problem is that inside his cage, he won’t pee in his box even if it has fresh litter and hay. we even set up two litter boxes in the cage where he was tending to pee, but all he does is move the boxes, pees, and moves the box back over it! he must know we don’t like it.
  
  i’ve read a little bit about bunnies getting spayed helping this out, but can i do anything else that could get him to pee in the box? so far we’ve just been cleaning it up with a paper towel and leaving the towel in the liter box, but it doesn’t seem to be working…

  Bunnies use their pee to mark off their territory, to let other bunnies know that this is their home and they are not welcome. This urge is particularly strong with a bunny who hasn’t been spayed/neutered. The peeing under and around the boxes may be this marking behavior. Spaying/Neutering usually helps bunnies get over this. Also, are there any other animals in the house that bunny may smell and see as a potential enemy?

  nope he is the only animal in the house. how much does it cost to spay or neuter a rabbit then if this seems to be the likely cause of the problem?

  Spaying and neutering varies area to area- so you will have to call around to find a vet that sees bunnies. Do you know if your rabbit is male or female? If it is male and an adult bunny- a vet would be able to tell if the bunny was not neutered yet (as long as anatomy is normal).
  
  It is important to take a bunny to a vet that is a good rabbit vet as bunnies are not like cats and dogs and have different needs and handle medications differently. I am sure someone else will add to this too- but I know there is a link somewhere to what you should ask the vet when you are calling around….
  
  But definitely sounds like bunny needs to be neutered if he/she is not already. I am assuming if someone dumped the rabbit they did not bother to get it approp medical care before they decided to discard it- so your bunny most likely is not neutered.
