Bunny on the kitchen table!

Well, Nelli has always been a bit more of a jumper/climber than BunBun, but this time she has possibly gone too far. She has been spotted wandering around on our kitchen table several times today! She’s not doing much, just nosing around at everything and looking about in her parinoid manner. Oh yeah, and I had to move the fruit bowl cuz she ate the peel off of one of the bananas.  The buns have always enjoyed lounging on the kitchen chairs. They have a big cardboard box next to the table, their “house”, and they jump up onto it and then hop from chair to chair. Us humans have ben banished to the living room couch for dinner- BunBun gets too offended if we sit on or rearrange his chairs. It’s fine unless we have company- other people seem to find it a bit odd.

  This is all fine- in fact I think that walking in the kitchen door to see a bunny on the table is hilarious. I do have 2 concerns, however. My first concern is whether or not I should put a little “stepstool” on their box so that BunBun can join his wife on the table. He seems kinda put out that she is up there without him, but he is shorter than Nell (he resembles a football with legs now that I think of it). I’m afraid he might try to jump up there and have a fall. My husband says that providing an easier way onto the table will encourage the buns to go up there. In my experience, once they have decided to do something, there isn’t much I can do to stop them, so encouraging is pretty beside the point.

  I guess this first concern leads to my 2nd one- is the table too high for the buns to be hanging out on? The tabletop is 2 1/2 feet high. Of course, they will hopefully jump from the table to the box to get down. My fear is that somepne will burst into the kitchen, scaring Nelli (which is not hard to do- she is extremely nervous) and causing her to fly off the table. Does anyone have experience with tabletop bunnies? Do bunnies generally refrain from leaping off of high objects, even not- so -smart bunnies like poor Nelli?

I don’t know that I would allow them on the table anymore. Just because like you said, they might get scared and jump off and might get hurt. When I had the cardboard castle for mine, each jumped off the top once. Rabbits do not have good depth perception and they didn’t realize how high up they were. Each seemed a bit spooked when they landed and never tried that again. Of course I tried to get to them before they jumped, but didn’t make it. I was afraid of them getting hurt.

It doesn’t take much for something to happen.

Your concern is valid. Generally I’d say (from observing my own) they would refrain from jumping down from high objects themselves but as you said, it they got a fright they could easily bolt from there. Another thing to be careful about is the surface they’re jumping from. A slippery surface like a table top could have them launching awkwardly and landing awkwardly.

I haven’t posted in awhile–been very busy, but found this post. I was going to ask a similar questions about bunnies jumping on tables. Clover has done this at least 4 times now even with me moving stuff around where I thought she was not able to. Last weekend, my mom said “Clover is on top of her house.” Then, she jumped from the house to the table (house is a little lower than the table and were fairly close together), however, she couldn’t figure out how to get down. Before I could get to her, she went back to her house and jumped from the top down. She’s also regularly jumps from her second story condo without a thought when coming out of her house (there is a mat in front of her house).

Anyway, this was so surprising to me, because I always thought bunnies were ground animals. This makes me wonderful whether I should be practicing jumping with her. :-/

Well when Cotton figured out how to get from the chair to the table took 3 days mind you I starting putting pillows in the chairs to block him from getting on top the table.    Worked

Then one nite hubby forgot and put the hot iron on top the glass table top and it broke.  Hurrah more room in here.  Got rid of the table n chairs lol.    We enjoy having more room.  I was trying to get hubby to put out that table n chairs so we would have more room.  Of course he refused.

That nite he had no choice lol.

Hannah recently figured out how to get up on the dining room table (by climbing onto the chairs, then jumping up) but we decided not to let her up there. For one, if I come into the room suddenly while she’s up there, she will get scared (since she has a feeling she’s not allowed up there) and will jump from the table directly to the ground, which isn’t safe. And two, we leave a lot of stuff laying out on the table and I don’t want to worry about her getting into it. I just don’t think it’s a safe place for bunnies to be. I would discourage your guys from going up there if you can. I find that telling Hannah “no” about 5 times is usually enough to keep her from doing it for at least a few weeks (then she usually figures out she can get away with it again and I have to start all over).

I’ve had my suspicions about my table cruisers. Sometimes I go through the kitchen and find one, only one poop sitting right in the center of the table.

I have found one sure way to make it so bunnies don’t get up on the table.

Don’t have a table! lol. My buns have taken over the area of the apartment that is supposed to be the dining room, so we don’t even have a table. Works for us hehe
