So caramel went in for a routine dental yesterday and did blood work and found her liver enzymes were very high. We didn’t do the dental but instead did an ultrasound and more electrolyte panels and found more enzymes were high and the ultrasound showed the liver normal size but many fluid pockets in her abdomen. Her tummy also feels very tough and she said she saw her intestinal wall get thicker. Her white cells are normal so no infection so her aspirate that was taken of the liver will be read today. The vet thinks it’s cancer, liver failure, heart failure ( but couldn’t hear anything from the heart) or toxic liver damage. I read a while back that gabapentin in buns could cause liver issues though the vet didn’t read that but she thinks maybe it could be that. She is now off that and on tramadol and a milk liver support med. she never showed any symptoms so that’s why this is so scary. I think we are going to redo bloodwork next week but of course treatment depends on what they slides say. I almost want to just start treating for liver failure .
Has anyone had this before? She’s just so young, I would hate for it to be cancer.

I am so sorry!! Athena had liver failure but we didn’t find out until the very end, poor sweetie. They gave her tramadol and a milk thistle blend which sounds like the same thing you got, so at least our vets are on the same page.

I just wanted to send you hugs and healing thoughts to ((((((Caramel)))))).

                  Thank you guys ❤️
I’ve been so emotional over the past 36 hours. She’s finally acting almost her normal self, anesthesia is so hard on her, but her stomach still taunt. So cytology results came back and no unusual cells found. It was noted that extreme cancer of liver and kidneys can’t be found without a biopsy so on Monday the vet will read the results ( since the lab sends the results to me) and we’ll go from there. Im hopeing it’s somehow gabapenten that was toxic to her but there’s no other med for her nerve pain to use.

                  I’ll keep you guys updated!

I’m so sorry, Bunny House!! I totally empathize, our bunnies are our family!! And so cute and fluffy too. My heart is just pulverized by them.

It’s great news that the cytology came back good, and that she’s acting better. Take the wins! My fingers will be crossed the biopsies will come back good as well! My bunny, Teddy, was just put on gabapentin for newly diagnosed spondylosis, and someone else said their bunny had meloxicam and omeprazole (or a similar med) to protect their tummy, instead. Though I have heard that meloxicam can be rough on the kidneys long-term… I wish we had better/cleaner options for pain meds!

Sending you and Caramel lots of hugs.

I can only imagine how emotional it has been and how hard it has to be to wait all weekend. Fingers crossed that the results are promising!

I don’t know if the milk liver support is the same thing but when my buck had elevated liver enzymes he was put on Lactolose with Milk Thistle and the retest results were in the normal range after 5 weeks. I so hope you get a similar result!!

                        Thank you guys!
Meg, gabapentin is an amazing drug but I would suggest blood tests every couple of month if you can afford it! Just Incase gabapentin is causing her liver to not work properly. But of course if it was the meds then I’ll let everyone know on here so you can be on the lookout!

I know meloxicam is good for minor pain but so hard on their kidneys, it’s so sad these meds aren’t technically good for them long term. Have you thought of doing laser therapy for Teddy? I know it works so well on painful backs, a lot of times it almost gets rid of the pain, it is costly but it doesn’t hurt to look into it!

Doodles, the bottle says “liquid hepato” but it does have the milk thistle in it! I hope she returns back to normal.
