I am a new bunny owner never had one in my life and I just brought home a few days ago this amazingly darling little Netherland Dwarf Bunny, and I’m already worrying myself to death.

I’ve read about noises they make, and have heard a few. I found out what a “Binky” is and the normal food habbbits for bunnies. Here’s what is concerning me:

He recently starting making this strange noise. I’ve looked up YouTube videos, and it kind of sounds like Honking. Sometimes louder than others, but he keeps doing it. Like continuous honking, even right now as I put him back in the cage again he’s making the sound. It sounds more like Honking than wheezing, but he’s doing it an awful lot. Mostly at night, or when he’s resting. He doesn’t really doing it as much when he’s playing, but he seems normal other than the sound. He Binkies like crazy, allll the time. He’s eating and drinking fine, he seems to have a healthy curious appetite to play and roam around, but the sound is kind of scaring me. I read that it could mean he has blocked nasal passages, or a tumor and I’m just scared over my precious little buddy. I haven’t even had him a week but we’ve bonded pretty well so far. It sounds like a combination of Honking and Chittering. Is he okay? Am I just overreacting or could something be wrong? He didn’t start doing it until a few days ago and now he keeps doing it. He was mostly quiet for most part. Do some bunnies just Honk more than others? I’m a newbie so don’t judge me too much. Any help will be appreciated!

Some bunnies are very vocal and will honk for a variety of reasons (if they’re “honkers”).

Is he looking for a lady bunny?

I can’t tell, I don’t even know if he’s altered or not, though the lady said he wasn’t going to get much bigger. So he might be?

My rabbit is a “honker”, and will honk and circle my legs when he wants me to pet him (that’s the pattern I notice). It can be expensive, but have you taken him to the rabbit vet yet? It might help calm your mind to know for sure if he is healthy, and is good to do annually, anyways.

There are girl bunnies too that honk, honking in itself is perfectly normal and not an observandum. Most sounds bunnies make have to be interpreted in context and some bunnies are not vocal while others are. If he starts following you around, circling you, nipping and spraying you with pee + honk, he’s a bunny in luuuuuve and probably not neutered.

The first things to look for regarding rabbit health are always appetite and poop. If a bunny looses its appetite, it’s a clear observandum and if it won’t even take a favorite treat, sth is up and can become very serious in rather a short amount of time (12-24 hs). I’m just saying this because you are new to bunnies, it’s not related to honking, it’s just the fundamental rule of having a bunny: check appetite and poop =)

                  Here’s a guide to poop: http://imgur.com/a/5N4lD

According to the guide, he’s got a nice normal pattern but may be too much protein. We literally haven’t even used up all the bag of pellets he ‘came’ with. (We bought a Bunny Starter Pack that the pet store was selling).

From the sound of it, it’s probably bunny love. He’s been tinkling a lot randomly but we thought he just wasn’t trained yet, of course. He’s got a healthy appetite, accepts his treats happily. He’s calmed down since writing the post, its mostly just soft honking noises when he eats now. I felt him purr for the first time today too while petting him. Last night I heard a soft “grinding” noise he was making though. I read that a soft grind can mean content, when a louder one can mean pain.

My best boy bunny honks when he runs and has ever since I adopted him. He is probably 4 or 5 and never caused him problems.

A grind that means pain is a choppy chatter, it can be quite loud and the bun looks unhappy. Sits bunched up, won’t take even the yummiest treat. I’ve heard pain-chatter and it’s pretty unmistakable.

A soft grind is also known as a tooth-purr. Sometimes it’s so soft it’s just a vibration like that you felt when you pet him, at other times it’s audible from a short distance. If the bun is relaxed f ex lounging where you can see him, it just means he’s very content.

It’s more purrs then. It’s something we can barely hear. It’s soft and he sleeps right across from us on our dresser, and I felt him purr the other day as well. He’s showing a lot of happy signs. He binkies 8-10 times a day, in and out of the cage, gets plenty of exercise, drinks a lot, loves treats, and eating fine. Thank you for all your help, like I said I’m new and I just wanted to know what to expect.
