Bunny LOVES the vacuum

Lola really loves the vacuum – at first it startles her and then once she realizes it’s okay she hops over and puts her head down and begs for me to run the little attachment over her.  I use the hose to clean out her cage and she’ll try to stick her nose up inside of it and she loves when I vacuum her bum.  It works perfectly because that’s where she sheds the most and makes grooming her easier but I was just wondering….is this incredibly weird?  AND – can it hurt her ears?

Oh. My. Gosh. I can’t believe she’ll let you do that!!! All 3 of my buns run for cover as soon as they hear it start up! They won’t even tolerate the hand-held vacuum without getting all flustered! You’re sooo lucky! Thankfully, they are situated right next to the AC vent in our condo — the part that sucks things in… they LOVE sitting next to that and it just so happens to suck all their fur off them. :X LOL.

Ya, no kidding. She is definitely a weird one. She is so well-behaved (potty trained herself, doesn’t mind her nails clipped, comes when called) that we don’t want to get her a bun friend and ruin our streak of good luck (even though I look at Craigslist and rescue websites daily….).

I just want to make sure the vacuum isn’t going to hurt her ears. I know they have more sensitive ears than ours and was curious. It doesn’t seem to bother her…but I wanted to check!

We used to vacuum our dogs growing up. They never minded it either. It is crazy for a buns though! Mine hated the vacuum so much, that I started putting a treat on top of the off vacuum for him to see it isn’t totally evil. He still runs to his litterbox when it is on, but then runs to it once it is off, looking for that treat.

If your buns isn’t acting like it is too loud and you only have it on to clean her, I think you are fine. You have a very awesome rabbit! So incredibly cute too!!

Squirrel will follow my little electric carpet sweeper around and try to chew on it as I’m using it He isn’t scared of the noise it or the vacuum makes, as he’s mostly deaf. He does avoid the vacuum though, he’s picked up on Moose being scared of it so he stays out of its reach.

I always keep Belle in her cage when I vacuum but she always comes over to the door and looks longingly at it… I wonder if she’d let me vacuum her

Meadow is frightened of the vacuum. Max will run sometimes, unless he’s eating, in which case I could probably run it directly over him and he’ll still keep eating… lol. I’m not sure about the sound. Newer vacuums are quieter I think, but I don’t really think vacuums are going to be too much louder than normal household sounds (music, movies, etc…)

Hunny is very curious of the vacuum… I also use the hose attachment pc to clean out their pen & she’ll come right over & start sniffing it… She use to get startled when she heard me turn it on but now that she’s older she’s more brave. A couple times I’ve tried to “suck her up” lol, but she still isn’t that brave…

You guys are soooo lucky. I have to close my buns condo when I wanna vacuum everything inside of it because they’ll have mini-heart attacks. And then they get angry because I locked them out. LOL. And your bun doesn’t mind her nails trimmed????! I am SOOO jealous. After having my little guys since April I FINALLY managed to do their nails and it was painful for all of us! My first attempt left me with a really bad bite so we waited a few weeks to try again. Thankfully this time we managed pretty good even though they sounded like we were murdering them. They were breathing sooo heavy and when I let them go their hair was all ruffled. It was a sight to behold.

I don’t think the noise will hurt her ears per se, but I would not get very close with it to her fur and not go near the ears at all (or head). If the loose fur comes up with it then it was ready to be shed, but I would be very careful not to pull any fur out with the vacuum. I’m more concerned about the ears being suctioned into the vacuum and getting hurt than the noise issue.

Blue is annoyed by the shop vac I use. and usually rushes back to his cage and pushes the hose out of it when I am trying to vacume lol

I agree with Pam that the noise shouldn’t be an issue – just make sure to keep it away from her face and ears.

Hannah is terrified of the vacuum, but Otto has been known to run up to it and nose bonk it. It’s tough to vacuum the living room when you have a bunny following you around, but he eventually decides it’s not interesting and hops off.

Ya – I don’t go anywhere near her ears or face.  Like I said, it’s basically her bum hairs that all shed off and look like a skirt.  We have a cheapy vacuum because our apartment is small so the suction isn’t even enough to stick to my hand if I tried.  I was just nervous about the sound – which sounds like it’s not a big issue! 

Thanks so much for everyone’s advice.  It sounds like Lola’s biweekly bum-fur vacuum is actually a blessing and will continue as long as she still loves it.  Let’s hope the novelty doesn’t wear-off….

Just to add another strange vacuum behavior, Bunjamin was initially scared of the whole thing but now he’s only scared of the hose part and when something get stuck. It makes high pitched whistle. When he got comfortable with it he chinned it. Of course, it’s gotta stay still if it’s moving, he’s moving.

And the little sneak, one time he had enough he went straight for the cord. Luckily I watch him like a hawk when I vacuum so I was able to stop him but I swear they’re so smart!

I wish my buns weren’t afraid of the vacuum but they are terrified. My rabbit room is partially carpeted and it always looks like a hay field because I vacuum only rarely since they all freak out. Olivia is the most afraid of it.

Amazing how different they really are. Bunnies are just like people (except cuter!).

Foo is terrified of the vaccum. We had to stop the one time we’ve had it on in the bedroom since we’ve had her because it freaked her out so much. She was all scrunched up in the corner and wouldn’t let me comfort her. No way she’d let us groom her with it.

Chubs thumps every few minutes when I vaccuum but then seems to love the vaccuumed space afterward. Comet used to try to bonk it when I had it out and would sort of follow me around investigating. He would never have let me vaccuum him though. If I acted like I knew he was there, he’d run away.

Peter and Penelope let me vaccuum them too, although depending on their mood for the day they may or may not be very happy about it.
Some days tey will literally beg though.

It’s great as they shed a LOT and their fur is so incredibly fine that it floats in the air for hours. They also shed a LOT.  Doesn’t matter if it’s summer or winter, hot or cold, they shed all the time.

Whenever I groom em I save the fur though.  Got a small bag full now.
The bag is like 2l and full and can be compressed down to fit your hand. It contains only 4 grams of fur!
